A contour product is grey-toned by design because shadows are grey. A bronzer is warm and belongs where the sun would hit, which is the top of the face rather than under the cheekbone. Getting that distinction right fixes most bronzer complaints. Heavy contouring peaked around 2016 and the correction has been running ever since, replacing grey structure with warmth. The reference shifted from a sculpted face to a slightly sunburnt one.

Powder needs something to grip, so on skin with little or no base it can look dusty. A cream or gel bronzer melts in and can be pushed around with fingers. The best bronzer for a no-foundation face is almost always a cream. Cream formulas won on bare skin for the same reason cream blush did, which is that powder needs something to hold onto. This is the defining texture shift of the last five years in makeup.

Go one shade warmer rather than two shades darker, and apply less than you think for the first pass. Bronzer is easy to build and difficult to remove. The eight below are all forgiving enough for that approach. One shade warmer beats two shades darker, and the first pass should always look like not quite enough. Depth is easier to add than to remove.
