The soft stuff

A weekend wardrobe has one job, which is to be comfortable without making you feel like you gave up. The difference is almost entirely fabric weight. A sweatshirt is the anchor. perfectwhitetee's Ziggy inside out fleece at $138 has the softer, lived-in surface, and FEAR OF GOD ESSENTIALS' classic crewneck at $130 is the heavier, boxier one. A hoodie covers the same ground with a hood, which matters more than it should on a cold morning: SKIMS' cotton fleece classic at $98 or GRLFRND's shrunken zip at $79, and I prefer the zip because you can take it off without ruining your hair. Then a sweatpant, and the shape is the whole decision. Port de Bras' Aya Jogger at $108 is the narrow one and NIKE's Balloon Track Pant at $130 is the wide one. An oversized cardigan finishes the group, from EAVES' Biancka at $214 or CARHARTT WIP's Signet at $228.

Layers and jeans

This is the group that lets you leave the house without changing out of weekend clothes. A cotton tee is the base and it is worth buying a good one, since a thin tee reads as scruffy under everything. COTTON CITIZEN's Seoul V-neck is $100 and LESET's Nando slim fit is $88. An overshirt goes on top and does the work a jacket would, with less commitment. One Teaspoon's patchwork flannel at $178 is the louder option and DONNI.'s quilted plaid flannel vest at $148 is the warmer one. Then jeans, and for weekends I want relaxed rather than straight, because there is no reason to be uncomfortable on a Saturday. AGOLDE's Harper at $218 and Rag & Bone's Saige at $202 are both mid to low rise and cut generously. A quilted jacket closes it: Free People's In A Bubble puffer at $169 or VARLEY's Belinda knit puffer at $170.

Shoes, cap and tote

The last four are the pieces you grab on the way out the door, so they should require no thought at all. A sneaker is the obvious one, and I would pick on material rather than logo. BY FAR's Prudent in suede at $197 is the one that works with a trouser, and NEW BALANCE's 1906 at $155 is the one you will wear until it dies. A clog is the shoe for the days you are barely going anywhere: UGG's Tasman Maxi Curly at $127 and BIRKENSTOCK's Boston soft footbed at $170, which are both genuinely warm. A cap is $50 either way, from Polo Ralph Lauren's chino or BOTTER's Reebok collaboration, and it solves an unwashed hair problem in one second. The tote is last: ANINE BING's Lara at $312 in canvas or Tory Burch's Ella nylon at $260, both of which can get wet.

Our honest take

The trap with weekend clothes is buying the cheapest version of everything and then finding it all pills after a month. Fabric is the only thing worth paying for in this category. Spend on the tee and the cardigan, where the difference is obvious in your hand, and save on the cap at $50 and the hoodie at $79. If you are buying one thing off this list, I would make it the New Balance 1906 at $155, which is the most-worn shoe in my own rotation. Everything here is in stock at Revolve or FWRD as of publication, and prices move, so check before you buy.
