A Rome Address on Every Bottle: Valentino Born in Roma, Donna and Uomo

Valentino Born in Roma is a fragrance line named after the city where the fashion house was founded. This edit walks through the Donna bottles, the Uomo ones, and two other Valentino perfumes for when you want to wander a little further.

Start with the address. Valentino Garavani founded Valentino S.p.A. in 1960 and opened his fashion house in Rome, on Via Condotti, a street of stone and shop windows where the city dresses up for itself. Valentino Born in Roma borrows all of that: the name, the pride of place, and the idea that a scent can be a small trip home. It is a line I think of as confident without shouting, and it has more range than the name suggests.

The Donna side is built as a family, and I find it easier to understand by mood. The original Eau de Parfum is the reference bottle, the one to smell first. Extradose Parfum is the same idea turned up, richer and longer, the one for winter coats and evening. Intense, with amber and jasmine, is the warm one I would wear to dinner. Then the colored editions come in. Green Stravaganza pairs vanilla with a tea accord, which sounds strange and works better than you would guess. Coral Fantasy is rose and orange, the bright and pretty one for spring. Purple Melancholia is the moody, quiet bottle, the one I would save for a rainy walk.

Do not rush this part. Try two on the same afternoon, one on each wrist, and the differences become obvious very quickly. I also like to smell each one again on my sleeve the next morning, because that is when you learn which ones you would actually reach for.

The Uomo side, and what it smells like

The Uomo side has the clearer backstory, so I can be more specific here. Valentino Uomo Born in Roma launched in 2019, created by Antoine Maisondieu and Guillaume Flavigny. The notes are unusual for a men's fragrance: mineral notes, violet leaf and salt at the top, ginger and sage in the middle, and then woody notes with vetiver underneath. It reads woody and spicy, but the first impression is cool and slightly salty, closer to stone in shade than to a cologne.

The other Uomo bottles push that idea in different directions. Valentino Uomo Intense is deeper and warmer, better for cold evenings, and I would call it the one to wear when you want the same idea as the original with some weight behind it. Extradose Parfum goes further still, the most concentrated of the group by design, so one small spray goes a long way.

Green Stravaganza is the bright one, made with coffee and bergamot, and it wears best in daylight. Purple Melancholia brings lavender into the picture, a softer take that suits anyone who finds most men's scents too sharp. The original Eau de Toilette adds violet to that cool opening.

None of these are gendered in any way that matters, and anyone can wear the Uomo bottles.

Two more from the house

Two more from the house are worth a smell, because they do not follow the Roma script at all. Vendetta Donna is built around tuberose, a white flower that is creamy, heavy and a bit theatrical. If Born in Roma feels too polite, this is the one that says something. It is the bottle for a night when you want to be remembered.

Voce Viva is lighter, with mandarin and orange blossom giving it a sunny, clean face that reads as fresh and floral. It is the easier of the two to wear, the sort of bottle you can put on without planning your outfit around it, and the one I would grab if I could only choose one on a plane.

I like having this pair next to the Born in Roma bottles because it shows that the house has more than one way of doing a perfume. Some houses have a single note that they play again and again. Valentino seems happier making a handful of very different characters.

What I would skip: layering several of these on top of each other because they share a name. Bottles in a family are made to be worn alone, and a heavy flower like tuberose fights with an Extradose Parfum rather than helping it. Skip testing more than three on skin in one visit as well, since your nose gives up after that and everything starts to smell the same.

How I would pick a bottle

To choose one, decide when you will wear it. For daytime and work, the Eau de Toilette strengths and the Green Stravaganza bottles are the easiest. For dinner, the Intense bottles. For winter, Extradose. For something a little unexpected, Vendetta or Voce Viva.

Spray on skin after a shower, one spritz at the neck and one on the chest or wrist, and wait an hour before deciding. If it still smells the way you hoped, that is your bottle. If it changed into something you did not expect, go back to the shelf and try the next mood along.

One last habit: keep a small bottle in the bag for the day and a bigger one by the bed. Perfume you only wear on special occasions tends to stay in the box, and these are too pleasant for that. Wear one on an ordinary Tuesday and see how the day feels different.
