A vanity bag is a small answer to a very old problem: loose lipsticks, hair ties and hot tools that need a home. Here are twelve cases and pouches from brands with real origin stories, from a heart-charmed Emi Jay case to four Stoney Clover Lane sizes.

A Vanity Bag Story That Starts with a Lipstick in a Cigarette Tin
In the 1930s, Sotheby's tells it, the jeweler Charles Arpels watched the American heiress Florence Gould drop her lipstick, lighter, powder and a few bank notes into a Lucky Strike tin, and the vanity case was the answer. I love that the origin is so unglamorous. Every vanity bag since has solved the same small problem, a handful of loose things that need a home, only now in nylon, cotton and neoprene instead of platinum. The first four are the roomy ones. Emi Jay started in 2009 when Julianne Goldmark, then fourteen, and a friend began making hair ties, and the On The Way case carries her signature heart charm and wipes clean with a damp cloth. LoveShackFancy was born in 2013 when Rebecca Hessel Cohen, a former magazine editor, designed her own bridesmaid dresses, and the Octavia bag wears a quilted bow and fits two full-size fragrances. Stoney Clover Lane's Large Pouch is fully lined nylon from the sisters who built a brand on patches. The Bagsmart case has a flat lay opening, so it stays open on a counter and you can see everything at once.

The everyday pouches
Smaller pouches are where the daily bag really lives. Olive Young opened in 1999 and calls itself Korea's leading beauty and health retailer, with a name taken from the phrase All Live Young, and its Flat Pouch in Blue comes with a playful handle detail. The Daily Beauty Organizer in Ivory is the structured one, and the brand is honest that it only wants a damp cloth, never a wash. Mane is the odd one out, in the best way. Jen Atkin launched it in 2023 as a hot tools brand that grew out of her hair website Mane Addicts, and the Neoprene Medium Hair Tool Pouch is a heat-resistant sleeve sized for curling irons, wands and flat irons. The Bagsmart Wide-Open Zipper Pouch has three pockets, one with a PVC liner for brushes, which makes it a good second toiletry bag. Tip: give the tool its own sleeve and the pouches stay clean.
Sisters, sizes and a skip
Stoney Clover Lane began in 2009 when Kendall Glazer, then seventeen, and her sister Libby, fifteen, turned a bracelet hobby into a business named for the street they grew up on. The bracelets gave way to customizable patches, and the pouches are where the brand lives now. The Classic Large Pouch in Sapphire has gold-tone hardware, a textile lining and a light seven ounces. The Slim Pouch is for pens, brushes and one lip product, and the Curved Mini Pouch in Plaid has a rounded shape and a plaid print. The Pouchette in Dark Gray adds leather trim and a horse-inspired design. What I would skip is stuffing the Slim Pouch until the zipper strains, or carrying loose liquids in the Pouchette, where a slim shape leaves no room for a leak. Sort by size first and the set works as a system.
Pack it the night before
Here is the habit I would steal from all of this. Pack the night before, and let each pouch hold one job, one for the counter, one for the tote, one for the tools. The bag matters less than the decision about what lives in it. A case with a heart charm and a nylon makeup bag with gold hardware do the same quiet work, which is keeping the small things from wandering. Pick the one that makes you want to zip it shut. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Chanel Lip Balm and a Lipstick Story That Starts in 1924 and Chanel Mini Flap.
