Abbode Pouches: The Travel Pouches Worth Buying

Abbode Pouches: The Travel Pouches Worth Buying

Abbode is a New York shop that embroiders names, initials and small private jokes onto pouches, tea towels and pillowcases. I am a sucker for anything with a note stitched into it, so this edit is about picking the one worth giving.

From dried flowers to custom embroidery

I did not expect to get sentimental about a pouch, but Abbode has a way of doing that. When founder Abigail started it in February 2020, it was not an embroidery studio at all. It sold dry floral arrangements and vintage pieces, and the New York City storefront followed in May 2021.

A year later, custom embroidery changed the whole shape of the business, turning a home and gifting idea into a place for keepsakes with a name or a phrase on them. Abbode's About page now lists collaborations with L.L.Bean, Djerf Avenue and J.Crew, which tells you the little shop grew up quickly.

I like the pivot because it puts personality in the detail. My advice is to choose a message the recipient already says out loud, instead of turning every gift into a souvenir.

Pouches with a personal note

Abbode's pouches make the most sense when the embroidery connects to a real habit or a private joke. Mrs. Waffle Pouch has a wedding-gift feel, and New York City Waffle Pouch reads like a memento of a place she loves. Out Of Office Martini Croc Pouch goes the playful route, the name alone setting an after-hours mood. Dachshund Mom Waffle Pouch, Golden Mom Waffle Pouch and Frenchie Mom Waffle Pouch are for the friend whose dog is clearly the main character.

Picture her slipping Travel Essentials Croc Pouch into an overnight bag for a weekend away, then using it every day after to corral the small things she reaches for. Before choosing a message, decide whether the pouch is for makeup, travel or keepsakes. What I would skip is a phrase that only fits one party; initials or a simple motif will still feel right next month. I went deeper on a related idea in Away Travel Bags: The Pieces Worth the Price.

Small details for kitchen and bed

The same sense of humor carries into the kitchen and the bedroom. Martini Tea Towel is a small wink by the stove, and Bonjour & Bonne Nuit Pillowcase Set feels like a gift for someone who treats bedtime as a ritual. Do Not Disturb Pillowcase is the blunt version, and Mr & Mrs Corner Pillowcase Set is for the newlyweds.

Picture a slow Sunday morning, coffee on the counter and a towel that makes an ordinary kitchen feel like hers. My rule is one phrase per room, with the other linens kept quiet. I would skip anything that belongs to a one-night joke unless the recipient has already made it her own.

A gift with a point of view

I like Abbode best when the personalization is just specific enough for the person receiving it to recognize herself. A pouch travels with her, while a tea towel or pillowcase keeps a favorite phrase in daily view. Her story shows how a small shop changed once embroidery became the center, and how the whole company grew around custom details. I would start with the object she reaches for most, then add one motif or line that feels like an inside note. The gesture should be personal before it is decorative. Although I would still check the spelling twice.
