Acler Dresses: What Makes the Occasionwear Stand Out

Acler Dresses: What Makes the Occasionwear Stand Out

Acler is an Australian label of occasion dresses, started in Adelaide by two designers who wanted a hand in every part of making a garment. I love a dress with a clear idea, and this edit is full of them.

The Adelaide duo behind Acler

I have a soft spot for friendships that turn into companies, and Acler is one. Kathryn Forth and Julia Ritorto met while working at another Adelaide fashion house, then started Acler together in South Australia in 2014. On the brand's own About page, they talk about wanting a hand in each part of making a garment. They began small, packing orders and handling customer service themselves, and the label has since grown into a globally stocked name with its studio still in Adelaide.

The process stays tactile by design. Garments are hand-draped in three dimensions, which is why curved seams, gold hardware and careful finishing give the dresses such a sculptural feel. That is the part I appreciate most in occasionwear: a dress can feel memorable because its line is considered, not because it needs ten accessories. When I reach for a bold shade or an architectural sleeve, I want it to change the feeling of a room before I have even found my shoes. I went deeper on a related idea in AMUR Dresses: Occasionwear with a Lighter Footprint. I went deeper on a related idea in NICHOLAS Dresses: Occasionwear Worth a Look.

Sculptural dresses for a big entrance

Acler dresses are most interesting when shape does more work than ornament. The Zofia Maxi Dress in lemon sorbet, the Newcatton Mini Dress in poppy reverie and the Eskett Mini Dress in mulberry send the color story in three different directions, with mini and maxi lengths for contrast. The Oakenzale Mini Dress in gold brings evening light, and the Actonhill Maxi Dress in ivory is the quieter, longer option.

Picture her arriving at a late-summer dinner in the Marara Maxi Dress in fig, sculpted cloth catching the last daylight, then letting the dress carry the conversation. Since Forth and Ritorto build each garment on a stand, I would keep jewelry simple and give the silhouette space. My test is to sit down, walk and raise your arms before choosing shoes. A dress should keep its shape in real movement, not just standing still.

The Reeve Mini Dress, Maxey Mini Dress and Pidgeonberry Mini Dress are the short end of the rack, and the Bettyhill Maxi Dress, Primley Maxi Dress and Kerrison Maxi Dress are the longer. What I would skip is wearing more than one loud idea at once. Let the dress be the statement.

Clarity in color and shape

Acler feels most compelling to me when a dress has one clear idea and still leaves room for the person wearing it. The label grew from two designers who wanted control over fabric, fit and finishing, and that intention shows in the draped shapes and confident color.

In my daydream, she keeps one Acler dress ready for the invitation that feels special before she even checks the time. It is not a costume for an event, just a piece that gives an ordinary entrance a little ceremony. Although I suspect she will wear it to a Tuesday dinner too.
