aligrace Jeans: Vintage Fits for Every Day

aligrace Jeans: Vintage Fits for Every Day

aligrace is a San Diego label that reworks vintage Levi's into jeans built around the person wearing them. I have a weakness for denim with a past, and this is the edit where I try to work out which pair I would start with.

How Ali Grace made room for a better fit

I think everyone knows the fitting-room frustration: you love the wash and the old-school character of a pair of jeans, and the rise or inseam never lands right. Ali Grace knew it too. She started aligrace in her UMass Amherst dorm room in 2018, after a hunt for vintage denim that fit turned into reworking thrifted Levi's for her friends.

Today the label lives in San Diego, and it is still built around one idea: let the jeans adapt to the wearer, not the reverse. Grace picks the vintage pairs herself, oversees the patterns and works with a local artisan team, so sourcing, alterations and washing stay close to home. Her About page reads exactly like that, a founder who never really left the workbench.

I find that reassuring. It also explains why a recent collaboration with Tatyana Lafata was rebuilt from individual vintage pairs, not cut from a fresh roll of cloth.

A jean for every kind of line

Denim here is a study in proportion, not a single prescribed leg. Vintage Relaxed Split Jeans are my starting point when I want an easy shape, while The Sloane Bootcut Jean gives a darker, longer line. The Monroe Barrel Jean has the curved leg I would balance with a close-fitting tee or a short jacket.

Vintage cotton does not stretch much, so I would read the measurement guide before picking a standard size. My rule is to decide first whether I want the waist close or the leg roomy, then let that lead. Picture her in the Monroe with a plain white tee, walking somewhere with no plan.

Shorts with shape built in

Shorts keep the focus on waist and leg volume. Off-duty Short is the pair I would reach for with a tucked shirt, while Original Short feels like the straightforward start, good with a camp-collar top and flat sandals. V Waist Original Short has a more shaped waistband, and Low Waist Ultra Baggy Short is the slouchy counterpoint.

Since the denim comes from vintage cotton, I would measure carefully instead of hoping it gives. My tip is to choose the volume you actually want and not size down out of habit. What I would skip is the baggiest short with an oversized top; one loose piece is enough.

The charm of denim with a past

I like that aligrace starts with a pair that already has a past instead of a blank roll of cloth. The point of view is in the adjusting: a rise changed to sit right, a leg reshaped, a hem opened or left raw, a worn wash kept and not erased. When I browse, I choose the silhouette first, then think about whether standard sizing or a custom measurement suits me. For denim with history, that feels like a kind way to make room for the person in it. Although I will admit I would still keep the old pair too.
