A classic outfit is mostly about the knit. I keep a short list: a gray cashmere crew, a navy cardigan, a good brown sweater, and jeans that fit. Lisa Yang's Sony and Mila sweaters are the ones I would buy first, in gray and black, because they go with everything and soften with wear.

 

For a cardigan, I like the English Factory navy one with its pocket detail and the Guest in Residence cashmere styles, worn open over a white tee. The Veronica Beard Journey pullover is my pick for a turtleneck that sits right under a coat. Add straight leg denim from ASKK NY or B Sides and a pair of loafers and you are done. Buy the sweater in a color you already wear, then wear it for years.
