Amazing Grace Perfume Smells Like a Clean Shirt and a Good Mood

Amazing Grace perfume launched in 1996 with bergamot, lily of the valley and soft musk, and it came from a founder who was sensitive to fragrance. This edit follows it through the bath and body line and into four other clean skin scents.

The story of Amazing Grace perfume starts with a founder who was sensitive to wearing fragrance. Cristina Carlino launched the brand philosophy in 1996 at the Rainbow Room in New York, and its first fragrance, Amazing Grace, arrived the same year. One fragrance writer notes it was created in response to Carlino's lifelong sensitivity to wearing fragrance, with the idea that people should say you smell good, not ask what you are wearing. That explains the whole thing. It is bright bergamot, then soft lily of the valley, then a musk that sits close to skin. Fragrantica credits the perfumer Tanya Petrakov and calls it a floral. I would call it a clean musk fragrance that smells like a shirt from the dryer, worn by someone in a cheerful mood. Grid one gives you four ways to wear it. The Eau de Toilette is the lightest, the Eau de Parfum is the original in concentrated form, Ballet Rose shifts the mood to rose, peony and lychee over pink musk, and the Bergamot version, which Fragrantica dates to 2019, turns the citrus up.

The body line

Grid two is the part of the Amazing Grace world I think people underuse. Body Spritz is the easy one, a lighter way to carry the scent through a warm afternoon. The Firming Body Emulsion and the Whipped Body Crème are both shea butter lotions, one a little more fluid, one airy and mousse-like, so you can choose by season. The Hydrating Bath and Shower Gel is where the scent starts, and it is labeled vegan. The philosophy label has always leaned on this idea, simple, pleasant products with a slogan and a clear purpose. The practical trick is to pick one texture, not all four. Gel in the shower, crème on damp skin, and a single spritz of the fragrance on top will smell like one continuous thought. Use them all at once and the soft musk turns heavy.

Skin musks from other labels

Grid three is for readers who like the clean, close feeling and want to see where else it lives. Missing Person from Phlur is the skin scent perfume of the moment. Chriselle Lim took over Phlur in 2021 and wrote the fragrance out of a painful stretch in her life, and it reportedly drew a waitlist of 250,000 people. London 1983 from Henry Rose puts fig and black pepper over musk and blonde wood, from a brand Michelle Pfeiffer named for her children's middle names. Acqua Neroli from Clean Reserve is mandarin and neroli over watery musk, and the parent company says it has set the standard for world-class fragrances since 2003. Rosie from By Rosie Jane is white musk and a touch of rose, inspired by bare skin. What I would skip is judging a musk in the first minute. These are built to warm up, so spray once, leave it for an hour, and then decide.

What I keep coming back to

What I keep coming back to is how modest Amazing Grace is. It never tried to be a statement, which is probably why it kept a place on so many dressers after other trends passed. A perfume built on the wish to smell clean, from a founder who was sensitive to wearing fragrance, feels honest to me. If you are starting from zero, try the Eau de Toilette first and the gel beside it. If you already love it, grid three is a pleasant tour of the neighbors.

If you want the shower gel side of this family, I wrote about the Fresh Cream body wash next to Amazing Grace.
