Anton Heunis Jewelry: Colorful Earrings to Know

Anton Heunis is the Madrid jewelry label built on vintage jewelry boxes, old films and a lot of colored crystal. I keep coming back to the earrings, which can do the work of a whole outfit.

How Anton Heunis made memory into jewelry

I will say it plainly: I like jewelry that has a little too much going on. Anton Heunis arrived in Madrid in 2004 after apprenticeships in Germany and London, where he worked with Roberto Cavalli and Emanuel Ungaro, and then started his own namesake label. The pieces are made in his Madrid workshop.

On the brand's About page, the references are vintage jewelry, films and the beauty of ordinary moments. The result is not restrained for restraint's sake. Crystals, floral shapes and color all get a place in the story, and the pieces feel like someone kept a box of old favorites and then began rearranging it with a sharper eye. Whether I want a small gold glint or a pair that can take over a plain outfit, this is where I would look.

One pair, a whole point of view

The earrings move from a neat glint to a full little constellation. The Sun Rays Earrings bring a sunburst to a gold outfit, the Omega Clasp Square Stud keeps things close to the ear, and the Omega Clasp With Square Pendant Earrings give that geometric detail some swing. If I wanted color and sparkle in a smaller footprint, I would start with the Pedant Crystal Cluster Earrings, then save the Crystal Knot Earrings or Tear Drop Earrings for an evening when the rest of the look can stay quiet.

The softer, simpler pairs deserve a mention too: the Virgin Drop Earrings, Drops Earrings, Drop Earrings, Omega Clasp Oval Stud and Stud With Clip Oval Earrings all suit someone who likes a little movement without a statement. The Omega Clasp Colour Drop Earrings sit somewhere in between.

Picture her in a crisp white shirt, hair tucked back, the Sun Rays Earrings catching the light at lunch. My rule is to choose one focal point: if the earrings talk, leave the necklace out and give the face the whole frame.

Color, clasp, and a little more swing

Here the Omega Clasp becomes part of the design language. The Omega Clasp Mono Colour Drop has a single blue accent, and the Omega Clasp Colour Drop in champagne reads softer. The Omega Clasp Triple Pixel & Leaves is the busier mix of color and ornament, and the Fuchsia Spectrum Oval Disc Chandelier is the pair I would keep for a black dress or a clean open collar.

In my fashion dreams she is on her way to a gallery opening in the Triple Pixel & Leaves, hair swept back so the shape has room. By day I would choose one of the smaller drops and let a plain knit do the quiet work. The brighter the stones, the less the outfit needs to compete.

Why I keep looking at the Madrid studio

Anton Heunis makes a good case for expressive jewelry: memory, handwork and color can all live in one piece. I like the contrast between the sparkle and the human scale of the designs, especially when a pair of earrings does the job of an entire outfit. The brand makes pieces to order and uses recycled crystals and vintage glass in its settings, which gives the ornament some intention. Although I suspect I would still reach for the loudest pair.
