Araminta James Tops: What I'd Actually Wear

Araminta James Tops: What I'd Actually Wear

Araminta James is the Noosa label from Melbourne-trained designer Georgina Browne, all terry towelling, soft cotton and easy shapes. I like it for the clothes you can wear out of the water and straight into lunch.

A Melbourne designer finds her coast

I like a brand that starts with a real wardrobe problem, and this one did. Georgina Browne had moved from Melbourne to Noosa, loved the ease of beach life, and still missed the shape and polish of city clothes. She had studied fashion design at RMIT and spent 15 years designing for Australian labels before opening her own line, so the polish was never going to disappear.

Her answer was soft tailoring in terry towelling and airy cotton, with a sunny Queensland rhythm. The first terry sets went online in February 2021, and the interest that followed came from all over, mostly from people sharing the clothes from their own living rooms. I can see why it traveled. It is not technical surf gear, just a gentler city-to-coast uniform that still looks ready for lunch after a swim.

Araminta James understands that what you put on after a swim can still look considered. The Chilli 99 Waffle Tee brings the texture, the Manzana Rib Tank is an easy base for a warm day, and the Cruise Dolphin Terry Top is the nod to the towelling that put the label on the map.

I would also look at the Lobster Shirt for a brighter layer and the Reverie Baby Tee when the outfit wants a shorter, neater shape. For cooler mornings, the Aj Vintage Knit Sweatshirt and the Splice Sweatshirt are the slow-morning pieces, and the Speedway Long Sleeve Tee is the one I would reach for with nothing planned. Picture her walking from the beach to lunch in the Cruise Dolphin Terry Top and a simple short, hair still damp.

Shorts for the long way home

The shorts make the beach-to-street idea very clear. The Ace Short is the straightforward base, the Retro Track Short brings a sporty reference, and the Tropiques Terry Short, Chilli Terry Short and Cruise Dolphin Terry Short carry the towelling story into the warmest days.

Browne's move from Melbourne to the Queensland coast gave her a reason to mix a tailored eye with lounge fabrics, and it feels natural here instead of staged. In my coastal daydream, she takes a late walk by the water in the Chilli Terry Short and a relaxed tee, then decides to stay out for dinner. What I would skip: wearing the terry shorts with a matching terry top every single time. One towelling piece per outfit is plenty. I went deeper on a related idea in Darlin Tops: What I'd Actually Wear Today.

From lounge pants to an easy dress

This is where the label stretches past beach lounge. The Bisous Trackpant has a playful name and a relaxed shape, and the Velour Stripe Trackpant adds a richer, softer texture. The Voyage Pant and the Pia Snap Pant are the trousers I would look at for a cleaner, everyday look.

The Tropiques Terry Dress puts the towel-soft fabric into one piece, a neat echo of the terry pieces Browne first took online in 2021. Her years designing for Australian labels show in how un-beachy some of this is. Picture her leaving an early swim in the Tropiques Terry Dress, then changing into the Voyage Pant for a slow dinner. I would pack the Pia Snap Pant too, as the dressier option.

A wardrobe with salt in its seams

What stays with me is the logic behind the clothes. Browne did not split the polished Melbourne wardrobe from the laid-back coast. She let them talk to each other in cotton, terry and easy shapes, and that is a more personal idea than it sounds. I would start with one tactile top or short, then let everything else come from the closet I already have. Although I suspect the Chilli Knit Tank Top would be the one I wore the most. If you want to keep going, OperaSPORT Pants and Tops: How to Wear Them is the one I would read next.
