Balenciaga City Bag: The Biker Bag Story, From Le City Medium to Mini

A first-person guide to the Balenciaga City bag, from the fall/winter 2001 runway to the Le City relaunch. It covers the top-handle, hobo, tote, moto, bucket, mini, nano and clutch styles and how to choose one.

Let me start with a runway. The Motorcycle bag was introduced in the fall/winter 2001 show, early in Nicolas Ghesquière's run as creative director at Balenciaga. Vogue reports that his bosses agreed to make about 25 of the bags for the runway, and that Kate Moss herself demanded one. W Magazine adds that she asked for one after the show, which convinced the house to put it into production. That is the whole origin of the balenciaga city bag, and I find it oddly charming that it began as a favor to a friend.

 

Vogue also says the first edition came only in black or brown before the house added a rainbow of colors, and that the original version was called the City. The name stuck in my head because it describes the bag so well. It is a soft, slouchy top-handle with moto zips, trailing tassels, rivets and buckles. British Vogue even mentions a handy mirror. The house itself dates to 1917, when Cristóbal Balenciaga, born in Getaria in 1895, opened his first fashion house in San Sebastián, and he showed his first Paris collection in 1937. So there is real couture training behind a bag that looks this relaxed.

Balenciaga's own listing describes it as Arena lambskin, with two hand-braided handles with waxed cord, a double-sided zip with long tails and one removable mirror.

 

The end of the grid is the same shape in other finishes: the Le City 26 Medium, the Medium Le City Bag, the Medium Pony Hair Bag, the Small Leather Bag and the Small Denim Bag. Pick those if you already know the silhouette and want something a little different.

The second grid is where the Le City family stretches out. There are hobos, totes, motos and a bucket, and each one changes how the bag behaves on your body. A hobo slouches, a tote stays open and square, a moto keeps the hardware front and center. Pick the shape first, then worry about the color.

 

The Le City Tote Bag Medium and the Le City Tote Bag Small are the practical pair. The Medium is the one I would carry to work with a laptop sleeve and a notebook, and the Small suits a lighter day. The Black 'Le City' Arena Lamb S Tote is the dark, quiet option, and it looks right with a black trench and flat boots. The Le City Beach Medium canvas tote bag in beige is the casual outlier, easy with a white shirt, linen trousers and sandals.

 

The Le City Hobo Bag Small and the Le City Hobo Bag Medium are my favorites for the way they hang. They fold slightly under the arm, and they look better a little lived in. I would wear the Medium over a long coat, and the Small with a slip dress and a leather jacket. The Le City Bucket Bag Small is a good answer if you like a drawstring feel and want your hands free.

 

Then the moto family: the Le City Moto Bag Large, Le City Moto Bag Medium, Le City Moto Medium Bag, Le City Moto Small Bag and Le City Moto Small. This is the shape that most closely follows the original biker bag, with its zips, tassels and buckles. Here the fitting-room test is the weight of the hardware. Load the bag with your real things, hang it on your shoulder, then walk to the mirror and see if it pulls your shoulder down. Wear a moto with tailoring and a plain tee, so the zips are the only loud thing in the outfit.

Small bags with a big personality

The third grid starts small, and I think it is the most fun. These are the mini, nano and clutch bags, the ones you carry when you want the Le City look without the bulk. The trade is simple: you give up room, and you get a bag that feels like jewelry.

 

The Silver 'Le City Mini' Metallic Lamb Leather Bag and the Le City Moto Mini leather shoulder bag in silver are the shiny pair. I would wear them with a black slip dress or a plain white tee and wide trousers, and keep everything else matte. The Le City Moto Mini leather shoulder bag in black and the Le City Mini leather top-handle bag in black are the darker choices, and they work with almost anything in your closet. The Le City Bag Mini is the simplest of the minis, a good place to begin if you have never carried one. If black is not your color, the Le City Mini leather top-handle bag in white and the Le City Mini suede top-handle bag in brown are the ones I would try.

 

Then the tiny ones. The Le City Flap Bag Nano and the Le City Bag Nano hold a card, a lip balm and a key, and not much more. The Le City Clutch and the Le City metallic leather clutch in silver are the ones for evenings when you want your hands free of a strap, and I would pair them with a satin skirt or a sharp black dress. The rest of the grid steps beyond the minis. There are Rodeo top handles in suede, python-effect and croc-effect leather, the Le 7 bowling bag and the Clicca shoulder bag, plus Le City extras like the Pouch on Strap, the Travel Bag and the East-West. They are all Balenciaga, and they share the same slightly undone attitude as the original.

 

What I would skip: loading a nano or a clutch as if it were your everyday bag. If your day needs a phone, a charger, a wallet and sunglasses, go back to the medium top-handle or the tote. A small bag looks best when it carries only a few things, and it will keep its shape longer that way.

How I would choose yours

Choosing the Le City that suits you is easier once you decide the job. For a bag that goes everywhere, start with a medium top-handle or a tote. For weekends and evenings, look at the hobos, the bucket or the minis. If you love the original biker spirit, the moto styles are the closest thing.

 

Try the strap drop, the handle length and the weight of the hardware with your real things inside. Look at the bag from the side, not only from the front, because that is how it will look walking down a street.
