ba&sh Jackets: The Manita and Other Standouts

ba&sh Jackets: The Manita and Other Standouts

ba&sh is the Paris label two friends started in 2003 to dress themselves, and it still makes clothes that look like they belong together. I came for the jackets and stayed for the knitwear.

Two Paris friends and an ideal wardrobe

I have a theory that the best clothing brands start as a favor to the founders, and ba&sh is a good case. Barbara Boccara and Sharon Krief met as teenagers, and when they launched the label in Paris in 2003, Sharon had studied law and Barbara had worked at a public relations agency. Neither was trained to make clothes. They just wanted a wardrobe they would actually wear, and the name is simply their first initials put together.

That origin still explains everything to me. ba&sh is French and feminine, but it never settles on one uniform. It is a wardrobe of complementary pieces, with prints, texture and easy layers doing the talking, so a jacket and a blouse look like they were introduced on purpose.

I also like that, in 2025, the founders took the day-to-day direction back. It suits a label that began with two women dressing themselves. That is the lens I bring to the cardigans, coats, blouses and dresses here: pieces meant to work together, not to look as if they came from separate lives.

Knitwear for a softer kind of layering

If I were building a ba&sh outfit one piece at a time, I would start in the knit drawer. The Maja Cardigan in multicolor is the playful one, the Dakar Jumper in chamois and the Fida Cardigan in ecru are softer and quieter, and the Salda Jumper keeps that light neutral mood in a plain pullover shape.

In my fashion dreams, she is at a long lunch in the Maja over a simple tank, then swaps to the Fida with a straight trouser when the day calls for a calmer palette.

My tip: when a knit has many colors or a warm tone, let it set the palette and keep everything else spare. What I would skip is choosing knitwear by color alone. Think about how it will sit over the shirts you already own.

Outer layers with a point of view

The Kam Coat in kaki is the practical anchor here, and the Manita Jacket in prune and Manon Jacket in terre bring the richer color. The Rallo Jacket in amande is softer, so it is my pick for a lighter look. I would keep everything underneath calm: a fine jumper, straight denim and a bag that does not add another focal point.

Picture her stepping out on a gray Paris morning with a jacket buttoned over an ecru knit, hands in the pockets, in no hurry at all.

Try a coat over the thickest sweater you own before you decide on the fit. If you plan to layer, I would skip sizing for a close fit.

A blouse to break up the neutrals

Color is where ba&sh gets to be a little less predictable. The Zelie Top in mandarine is the bright note, while the Nika Top in cafe and the Kaela Blouse in kaki sit in a more grounded palette. The Cedric Top in multico has the pattern energy I would use to wake up dark denim or a plain trouser. The simpler shapes give a jacket a quiet base, and the patterned one can stand on its own.

My styling rule is one print or one saturated shade at a time. I would skip a second busy layer, so the top stays the point and the outfit still feels like something I would wear on a regular Tuesday.

One grid, several kinds of plans

This is the part for deciding where the day is headed. The Wasta Dress in blush and the Oceane Dress in raisin make the dress side feel romantic, and the Tonnie Dress and its quieter attitude are there for days that need less. The Raja Pants in amande and Naho Pants in cafe build an outfit around trousers instead, and the Tosie Short in ecru and Rio Short in blue jeans are easy weekend answers. The Belt Betsy in marron can pull a simple shirt and pants together.

I would pick the piece that fits the actual plan first, then let color finish it. One tip: keep the belt close in tone if the outfit already carries a print.

The ideal wardrobe, made personal

An ideal wardrobe stays interesting past one season because it has to answer to real life. ba&sh started with two friends making the clothes they wanted, and the collection reads best when pieces move between a lunch, a workday, a weekend away and dinner. I would start with the knit I can wear three ways, then add the jacket or dress that changes the mood without changing who I am. Although I suspect I would end up buying the belt first.
