Benefit BADgal Bang! Volumizing Mascara and the Twins Who Flipped a Coin for a Beauty Boutique

A look at Benefit BADgal Bang! Volumizing Mascara and the San Francisco twins behind the brand. Four mascaras, four brow gels and waxes, and four waterproof brow fillers to go with it.

A coin toss started Benefit. In 1976 the Indiana-born twins Jean and Jane Ford landed in San Francisco with two ideas, a casserole cafe or a beauty boutique, and the coin said boutique. They called it The Face Place, and its first product, a rose-tinted stain, became Benetint. By 1990 the shop had become Benefit Cosmetics, and in 1999 LVMH bought it. What I like is that the tone never changed. The brand still talks like two funny women behind a counter, which is exactly how I want a mascara to be sold to me. Benefit BADgal Bang! Volumizing Mascara is the loudest example. The brand says the formula contains aero-particles, a very light material borrowed from space technology, and pairs it with a custom brush. The idea is volume that builds the more you layer, without the clumpy weight. The first grid below starts there: the original in Intense Pitch Black, the waterproof version, Fan Fest for a fanned-out look, and They're Real! Magnet for length. If you only own one of these, make it the one that matches what your lashes already do. Short and straight lashes want volume, long ones usually want separation.

Brows get the same treatment

Benefit did not stop at lashes. The brand opened its first Brow Bar in 2003 in a San Francisco department store, which is part of why people still think of it first for brows. That same habit of making a grooming step feel friendly runs through this second grid. The 24-HR Brow Setter is a clear gel with a dual-sided wand, the kind of benefit brow gel you reach for when your brows are fine and just will not stay put. Gimme Brow+ adds tinted microfibers for fullness, and I find shade 4 reads warm and deep rather than muddy. Fluff Up is a clear, flexible wax for brushing hairs up and out, and Precisely, My Brow is a tinted wax in shade 03 for a more sculpted shape. Here is my practical tip. Wax wants a tiny amount and a clean spoolie, so brush upward first, then press it in at the front of the brow. The thing I would not do is stack a gel on top of wax while it is still tacky, since the two fight and you get flakes.

Pencils, powder and a glaze

The third grid is for people who want a line, a fill or a finish that does not move. Goof Proof comes as a pencil and as a powder, the Precisely, My Brow Detailer is a microfine pencil with a 0.8-millimeter tip for hair-like strokes, and Dream Sheen is a tinted glaze gel with a polished shine. All four are waterproof, so this is where a waterproof brow pencil earns its place on a humid day or after a swim. Shade matching matters more than formula here. Go a half step lighter than your hair, then build, because brows look heavier in a photo than they do in the mirror. What I would skip is drawing a full outline with the Detailer. It is made for tiny strokes in the gaps, and the moment you trace the whole arch it looks drawn on. Use the powder for the bulk of the fill, the pencil for the gaps, and the glaze last to smooth everything down.

Start with the lashes

If I had to pick a place to begin, I would begin with the mascara and then let the brows follow. Benefit built its name on the idea that small, playful rituals add up to a face you recognize as your own. Try BADgal Bang! first, see how your lashes respond over a week, and then decide whether your brows need a gel, a wax or a pencil. That order has saved me from a lot of drawer clutter. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Benefit Brow Bar at Home and Benefit Blush, From the Original Benetint to Juice Stick. For a different lash look, I compared the best Benefit mascara formulas by brush, from Roller Lash to Fan Fest.
