Black and Cream Outfits for Fall

Black and Cream Outfits for Fall

Black and cream is the pairing that always works. Cream knits and silk, black pants and skirts, and shoes and bags in both, for a fall wardrobe that runs on two colors.

Black and cream is what I wear when I want to look like I have my life together. It's the softer, warmer cousin of black and white. Cream is milk in coffee or a linen tablecloth, and next to black it looks calm rather than stark.

The difference between cream and white matters more than you'd think. Bright white next to black is graphic and a little office-like. Cream is gentler, especially near your face, and it makes black look richer.

Start with cream on top. Loro Piana's Cocooning cashmere polo is the dream, but Simkhai's Ivy brushed knit polo gives you a similar feel at $295. Khaite's Loucin top in Ivory Glow is a boxy polo shape I'd wear with black pants every week. Zimmermann's Valiant blouse has lace trims and bell sleeves, very romantic, and Toteme's scarf-detailed blouse ties at the neck. For a full cream look, Khaite's Ria dress is long and fluid, and Loro Piana's silk-dupioni pants are the most luxurious neutral pants on this list.

A simple formula: cream knit, black pants, black boots and a cream bag. Or flip the proportions with a black sweater, cream pants and cream boots. Both look calm, and both work from breakfast to dinner.

Black is the half you probably already own. So when you add to it, add texture rather than more flat black.

Khaite's Hunter pant in black velvet is soft and rich, great with a cream knit. Jil Sander's draped wool-sablé pants have a fold of fabric at the front that moves when you walk. Jean Paul Gaultier's sculptural skirt is knee-length with a flared, gathered hem. Lauren Manoogian's Bottle skirt is alpaca-blend, a long, cozy column at $370.

For dresses, Cult Gaia's Delainey gown is off-the-shoulder and draped, and the Viollet knit dress is a simple black midi for every day. Loulou De Saison's Sibyl sweater has a wide fold-over neck. Simkhai's Soft T-Shirt is $125 and exactly what it says.

Mixing velvet, knit and wool makes black look deliberate. All matte black can look flat.

Shoes and bags are where you can play the two colors off each other. A cream bag with a black outfit, or black boots with cream pants.

Manolo Blahnik's Chelata boots are black suede Chelsea boots, the most practical shoes here. Aeyde's Lila boots are cream leather with a low heel, a lovely surprise with black pants. Cult Gaia's CG Platform is a black thong sandal on a chunky sole, and Simkhai's Elin sandal is cream with shell beads.

For bags, Toteme's Clip top-handle bag is black textured leather in a flat, boxy shape, and Simkhai's Wynn is the cream equivalent at $595. Cult Gaia's Sybil crossbody is black and quilted with gold hardware, and Sea's Carlotta clutch is cream with beaded fringe for evening.

If your outfit is mostly black, go cream on the bag. If it's mostly cream, go black on the shoes.

Keep your metal hardware in one tone, gold or silver, and the whole look stays clean.

Our honest take

Black and cream is the most forgiving pairing there is, which makes it easy to overbuy. You probably own half of this story already.

What I'd skip: bright optical white instead of cream, which turns the look cold, and pieces with heavy contrast piping or color blocking, which date quickly. I'd also think twice about cream pants if you commute on public transit in a rainy city. Pale fabric and a damp bus seat are not friends.

If you take one thing away, it's this: swap your white basics for cream ones and keep adding texture to the black. A cream knit, black velvet or wool pants and one good bag in either color will carry you through the whole season.
