This edit splits it into the three versions that actually behave differently: tailored, leather and plain.

Pleated and tailored

Pleats and suiting fabric are what make a mini read as clothing rather than as going out. The tailored version is the reason the skirt suit came back, and it is the one that survives an office with a strict reading of business casual.

Leather and faux leather

Leather is the mini's loudest register and the one with the longest run. It holds a shape on its own, which is why it looks deliberate with a flat shoe and slightly aggressive with a heel.

The plain black mini

This is the one that gets worn twice a week and never photographed. No hardware, no texture, no argument, which is exactly why it outlasts whatever silhouette the season is pushing.

Our honest take

Most people buy the mini too short and then never wear it, which is a waste dressed up as a trend. Measure the length against a skirt you already reach for, and treat any waistband that needs a tug as a fail. If you take one thing away, the shortest one in the shop is rarely the one you keep.
