Body butter used to be a thick, sweet-smelling afterthought sold next to the bath bombs. The skinification of body care has turned it into a place for real actives, better textures and fragrance people actually want to wear.

Body Butter Got the Skincare Treatment
The whipped originals
Before body care became a skincare category, the body butter was mostly about scent and a rich, occlusive feel. Kiehl’s Creme de Corps Whipped Body Butter is a longtime favorite that kept the texture light enough to use daily. Sol de Janeiro Delícia Drench comes from the brand that turned body care into a fragrance event, with a devoted following for its scents. Both still set the bar for what people expect a good butter to feel like. The difference now is that people expect it to do more.
When body care borrowed from skincare
The real shift in the butter category is ingredients that used to be reserved for faces. The Youth To The People Superberry Dream butter brings niacinamide and hyaluronic acid below the neck. The Sunday Riley C.E.O. butter is built around vitamin C, a face-serum staple now aimed at elbows and shins. This reflects a broader move where people apply the same logic to their legs as to their cheeks. It is a little extra, and also completely reasonable.

Butters from the sea and the garden
Some brands have leaned into botanical and marine ingredients as the whole point. OSEA’s Undaria Algae butter uses seaweed, a signature of the Malibu brand’s clean positioning. Oak Essentials Dew comes from a newer label with a pared-back, calm aesthetic. Both feel less like drugstore moisturizers and more like skincare that happens to be for the body. The butter here is about feel and ingredient story in equal measure.
Dry-touch and balm textures
The last frontier for the butter is texture, since nobody wants to sit on a couch feeling greasy. Glossier Crème de You is explicitly a dry-touch butter, meant to absorb quickly enough to get dressed right away. The Summer Fridays butter balm takes the opposite approach, with a rich balm that leans into comfort and a vanilla scent. One is for the rushed morning, the other for a slow evening. Between them sits most of what people now want from a body product.
Our honest take
If you take one thing away, it is that a butter should earn its place in the routine rather than just smell nice. The whipped originals still do the basics beautifully, and there is no need to overthink a winter moisturizer. If you want visible change, pick one with a real active and use it consistently on the areas that need it. If you hate the greasy phase, a dry-touch formula will get used far more often than a rich one sitting on a shelf. The best body product is the one you actually reach for.
