Born This Way Concealer, Plus Full Coverage Alternatives and Brushes

Too Faced's Born This Way concealer started as a shade-range story and turned into a full face line. This edit covers the Born This Way family, the full coverage concealers I would compare it with, the correctors that go underneath and the brushes that make it blend. Start with the Super Coverage Multi-Use Concealer.

How Born This Way earned its shade range

In the summer of 2018, Too Faced worked with the beauty creator Jackie Aina to add eleven new shades to its Born This Way foundation. The Super Coverage concealer had just gone live on the brand's site in twenty shades, running from Swan to Cocoa. Allure later reported that, after much discussion about the importance of inclusive shade ranges, the concealer was planned to grow from twenty to thirty-five shades in 2019. A cheeky, glitter-pink brand grew up in public, and it did it by listening.

That is a good way to understand the brand. Too Faced was founded in 1998 by Jerrod Blandino and Jeremy Johnson, who began their careers behind Estée Lauder counters, and Estée Lauder Companies bought it in 2016. I like the counter background. It shows in how practical the line feels once you hold it. The Born This Way concealer is the clearest example: full coverage, but sold as hydrating, with coconut water, alpine rose and hyaluronic acid in the formula, and a brand claim of no flashback and wear that holds through sweat and humidity.

The trick is to see the family as a set. The Super Coverage Multi-Use Concealer is the hero, and the brand says it can double as a foundation. Brighten & Correct does what its name says, brightening and correcting, and Ethereal Light Illuminating Smoothing Concealer is the soft-focus one for days when full coverage feels like too much. Ethereal Setting Powder and Soft Blur Flexible Finish Setting Powder lock it in, and the Undetectable and Soft Matte foundations fill out the base. Super Glow is the highlighter for the finishing touch.

Full coverage concealers from other brands

Most full coverage concealers look great when wet and different once they settle, so swatch two at the jaw in daylight and wait a few minutes before you decide.

tarte's Shape Tape is the one everyone knows, and it is the obvious benchmark for the Born This Way formula. NYX's Can't Stop Won't Stop 24HR Full Coverage Matte Concealer is the pared-down alternative if you want a matte finish that is built to last a full day. Benefit's POREfessional 24-Hour Blurring & Full-Coverage Natural Finish has the pore-blurring effect built in, and MAC's Studio Fix 36HR Smooth Angles Hydrating Concealer is the choice for drier skin, since hydration is in the name.

Fenty Beauty's Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Longwear Liquid Concealer and NARS's Soft Matte Complete Full Coverage Longwear Concealer are the two I would test side by side in daylight. Dior's Forever Skin Correct Full-Coverage Concealer is the polished one, and MAKE UP FOR EVER's HD Skin Full Cover Multi-Use Waterproof Concealer with Niacinamide is the answer for humid summers and long wedding days.

Wear the full coverage concealer only where you need it, then a lighter one everywhere else. Two textures on the face look more natural than one heavy layer.

What I would skip: full coverage concealer on dry, flaky skin without moisturiser under it. It will cling to every line.

Under eye correctors and brighteners

Order matters with correctors: a thin layer first, then concealer on top. Reverse it and you cover the corrector you just applied.

tarte's CC full coverage undereye color corrector and Kosas's Revealer Extra Bright Serum-Powered Color Correctors for Dark Circles are the two that name their job most plainly. Natasha Denona's HY-GLAM Brightener and Saie's Hydrabeam Hydrating & Concealing Under Eye Brightener are lighter, more luminous choices, and Saie's is the one to reach for if your under eyes feel dry. Bobbi Brown's Skin Long-Wearing Color Corrector Stick is the stick format, quick to swipe on in the morning.

Huda Beauty's #FauxFilter Brightening Under Eye Color Corrector and Sephora Collection's Best Skin Ever 8HR Color Corrector are the easy first picks if you have never used a corrector before. Charlotte Tilbury's Magic Vanish Color Corrector is the more glamorous of the group.

Try this: tap a corrector on with your ring finger, only on the darkest part of the circle, and blend outward. A small area, pressed in gently, looks better than a wide swipe.

What I would skip: a corrector on a day when you are wearing very little makeup. It can show as a patch of color.

Concealer brushes and precision tools

Pressing beats dragging with any concealer brush. Dot the concealer on, then tap it into the skin with a small brush, and it stays where you put it.

Hourglass's Vanish Seamless Finish Concealer Brush is the flat, precise one. Haus Labs' Cruelty-Free Concealer Brush and Makeup by Mario's F5 Concealer Brush are the simple, dependable pair. Patrick Ta's Dual-Ended Concealer Brush gives you two shapes in one handle, which is a good travel move, and caliray's Eyes Up Here Concealer Brush is the friendly first brush.

NARS's #10 Radiant Creamy Concealer Brush and Fenty Beauty's Precision Concealer Brush 180 are the small, shaped heads for the inner corner of the eye and beside the nose. Laura Mercier's Secret Camouflage Concealer Brush is the camouflage brush, as the name suggests, for spot work.

A pairing I like: a brush for the inner corner and a fingertip for the rest. Warmth from the fingers softens the edge, and the small brush keeps the concealer out of the creases you were hiding from.

Start with one brush and use it for a week before buying a second.

What I would skip: dragging a stiff brush under the eye every morning. Skin there is thin, and a gentle tap does the same job.

The Super Coverage concealer that stays in my bag

Born This Way concealer stays in my bag partly because of the story behind it, a brand that added shades after a very public conversation about range. The rest is practical: coverage that stays and a formula that does not feel like paint.

I would start with the Super Coverage Multi-Use Concealer in your shade, a dusting of Ethereal Setting Powder in the T-zone only, and one small brush. The brand had its moment in 2018 and the range has only grown. Yours is a small ritual: match the shade in daylight, press, and let it settle.

If full coverage is more than you need, I also looked at water based concealer for a lighter finish.
