Every Bottega Veneta bag dupe search starts with a weave that has a plain origin. Judge the gather by how it falls. Pinch the top and let go: soft leather should settle back into folds, not crease sharply. I would pair the black ones with a slip skirt and tights, and the brown with a camel blazer.

What I would skip: a pouch with so little give that it stands up on a table by itself.

The totes are where a weave has the most room to show. Vogue says the house's woven bags were made to be durable, so the first thing I would look at is whether the strips run evenly from the base to the handles, with no gaps and no puckering at the corners.

Then I would run the same checks every time: even strips, quiet hardware, leather that settles. Lee said the house is a company built on woven handbags, which is exactly why the weave is easy to love and unforgiving of a sloppy finish.

Back in Vicenza in 1966, thin leather needed a workaround. I would choose the bag that still looks like a good answer to something.
