Boys Lie Tops: Graphic Sweatshirts and More

Boys Lie Tops: Graphic Sweatshirts and More

Boys Lie is a Los Angeles streetwear label that prints a heartbreak joke on soft sweatshirts and sweats. Tori Robinson and Leah O'Malley started it in 2018, and I love how much comfort is hiding behind the punchline.

A phrase that became a place to land

I think some brand names are a joke, and some are a friend patting your back, and Boys Lie is the second kind. Tori Robinson and Leah O'Malley grew up down the street from each other in a Philadelphia suburb. In 2016 they were going through breakups at the same time, and the phrase they kept repeating to each other for comfort became a business two years later. Their own origin page talks about confidence as a tool and community as the way to build it.

The first version was a makeup line, but two merch pieces sold out while the cosmetics did not, so the pair turned toward clothing when customers asked where to buy them. The result is graphic loungewear where a feeling can show without turning the outfit into a speech. The Good Bye Set became a breakout when Gigi Hadid wore it, and I think the label has kept that friend-to-friend warmth ever since.

Feelings, printed big

The graphics do the talking here, which is half the reason Boys Lie caught on. The Emotional Support Staff Boyfriend V2 Top is oversized and soft, so I would wear it with straight jeans on a travel day and not bother tucking. The I Miss Nothing About You Harley Zip-up Hoodie is an easy layer over a tank, with a message that is mostly a dare. On the sportier side, the Dating History Mother Pucker Jersey Top gives the humor a jersey shape, and the Athletic Dept V3 Kara Crewneck Sweatshirt has a varsity mood.

The Manhunt Racer Hoodie, Honor Roll Henley Crewneck Sweatshirt and Perfect Match Sweatshirt round out the wall of slogans. My tip: pair one talkative top with a quiet bottom and let the lettering be the outfit's only punchline.

Sweatpants with their own point of view

Boys Lie bottoms make the matching-set idea feel less rigid, because each pant has its own color. The All-star V3 Kimmy Pant is lavender and pull-on, sold on its own, which is my cue to wear it with a simple rib tank or a broken-in tee. The Starlight 2 Kimmy Pant brings a brown option, and The Lena Alex Pant shifts into blue. Rocker V2 Kimmy Pant is the one I would try if I wanted a fourth mood.

Picture her out for coffee in one pastel pair, an oversized sweatshirt and sneakers, wearing the same pants again on the flight home. I would compare the fit with my favorite sweats before choosing a size, especially if I wanted a matched set.

A cozy layer with a sporty streak

The rest of the edit moves between cozy and sporty. Hit The Slopes Sporty Thermal Long Sleeve is soft and lightweight, so I would wear it with loose jeans the first week the weather turns. Dream Team Jersey is a playful nod to team merch instead of a standard tee. Hanger 10 A1 Cropped Jacket has a shorter hem that balances wide-leg sweats.

Picture her throwing the jacket over a set for a quick errand run. What I would skip: the thermal, if you prefer a closer silhouette, since it is one-size-fits-most.

The joke comes with a soft landing

I keep coming back to how Boys Lie turns a private feeling into something shared. The punchy graphics get your attention, but the founders' story and the community behind the clothes give the label more staying power than a slogan alone. I would start with one graphic layer, then decide on the full set. Although I know I will end up wearing the funniest one most. I went deeper on a related idea in The Graphic Tee Is More Than a Weekend Uniform.
