Brown Jacket Outfits to Try This Fall

Brown Jacket Outfits to Try This Fall

A brown jacket is a useful starting point for fall dressing because it can sit comfortably beside black, cream, white, and denim. These outfits give the jacket different company, from a clean trouser line to a skirt or washed jeans.

The V&A's entry for Buccaneer describes a brown checked, cross-cut wool-tweed jacket with dropped armholes and bishop sleeves. I like that the archive gives the jacket such a definite shape; brown can feel much more intentional when the cut is doing something.

Black makes brown look deeper, cream gives it a lighter middle, and denim relaxes the whole combination. A brown jacket can be the largest warm note without requiring every other piece to match it.

Before heading out, put the jacket on over both a light and a dark base. The version that still looks balanced with the jacket open is probably the easiest outfit to wear all day.

Cream Trousers Under a Dark Jacket

Anna Quan's Morandi Jacket gives this brown jacket outfit a dark-brown top layer with a defined shape. superdown's Itzel Cowl Neck Sweater brings black close to the face, and LAMARQUE's Emile Pant opens up the middle in cream. Vagabond Shoemakers' Giselle Boot returns to black at the foot. I would wear the sweater tucked just at the front and leave the jacket open, so the pale trouser reads as a deliberate break. This is the cleanest version of the group, and the one I would choose when the day includes a meeting but I still want to look like myself afterward.

Ruffles Against Straight Lines

Maude Club's Brenda Jacket is the brown jacket here, paired with the cream Ridley Ruffle Sweater from Show Me Your Mumu. Kimberly Taylor's Ryan Pant adds black leather, and House of Harlow 1960's Chantall Boot repeats the dark base. The ruffle gives the upper half a bit of movement, so I would keep the jacket open and let the black trouser make a straighter line below. Brown and cream can look very soft together; the leather pant is what keeps this outfit from tipping into sweetness. It feels like a good dinner look that still has room for a long walk afterward.

Tobacco With a White Knit

retrofete's Callandra Jacket is tobacco, and the Enza Costa Silk Knit Long Sleeve Crew gives it a clean white partner underneath. LAMARQUE's Chalina Skirt and Ganni's Cleated Mid Chelsea Boot both sit in black, making a simple dark base for the warm jacket. This brown jacket combination is proof that the shirt does not need a collar or a complicated neckline to make the outfit feel finished. I would keep the crew tucked and let the jacket hang open; that small white panel is enough contrast. The cleated boot gives the skirt a sturdier counterpoint than a delicate shoe would.

Faux Leather, Khaki, Black

L'Academie's Neriah Reversible Faux Leather Jacket has a chocolate-brown side, so there is texture built into the brown jacket before anything else comes into play. BY.DYLN's Faye Top adds black, Steve Madden's Livie Skirt introduces khaki, and The Attico's Charles Loafer finishes in black. I would keep the top tucked and wear the jacket open, allowing khaki to show as a clear strip between the dark pieces. The skirt is the quieter partner here, but it matters: without that lighter, earthier note, the outfit would read as a wall of dark tones.

Take the Jacket to Denim

ALL THE WAYS' Simone Faux Leather Jacket is dark brown, while LIONESS' Femme Blouse brings camel into the same warm range. SELMACILEK's Edge Denim Pants loosen the palette, and Flattered's Sara Loafer gives the outfit a black finish. This brown jacket look is the most relaxed of the five, largely because denim changes the posture of everything above it. I would leave the blouse untucked at the back and let the jacket stay open, rather than adding a belt or another layer. The black loafer is a neat end point; a second brown accessory would make the outfit feel too coordinated.

Let the Jacket Set the Temperature

Brown pairs easily with black when the shapes stay clean, and cream or denim gives it a lighter counterpoint. What I would skip is matching every warm neutral from head to toe. Let the jacket be the largest brown area, then give the rest of the outfit its own job.
