Burberry Shoes for Women: Boots, Flats, Loafers and Slides

Burberry shoes women reach for most often, sorted into rain and riding boots, ballet flats, loafers and pumps, and the slides, clogs and sandals. I walk through the checks, the Knight and the shapes so you can pick by how you actually live in them.

Burberry says Thomas Burberry was a 21-year-old former draper's apprentice when he opened his first shop in Basingstoke, Hampshire, in 1856. Gabardine followed: the brand says it was invented in 1879 and patented in 1888, and that it has defined its outerwear for more than a century. I think of that every time a friend asks me about Burberry shoes women can wear in real weather, because the whole house began with rain. The check arrived in the 1920s as a lining for rainwear, which is why a rain boot with a check on it feels like the most honest thing in the shop.

So I start with boots. The Cavalier Check Rain Boots and the Marsh Stamp High Rain Boots are the obvious ones for a wet commute. Burberry describes its Marsh boots as a rubber design inspired by traditional wellies, and the Marsh Stamp Rubber Rain Ankle Boots and the Women's Marsh Stamp Check Rain Booties are the shorter versions that sit under a cropped trouser. The Rubber Marsh Stamp Heeled Low Boots are made in Italy from rubber and a nylon blend, with a Knight stamp, an archival motif first seen on Burberry bags in the 1980s.

If rubber is not what you are after, there is a lot of leather. Burberry says its Chelsea boots are inspired by equestrian heritage and made in Italy from calf leather with the check, and the Leather Gravel Chelsea Boots belong to that idea. The Huntley Booties and Huntley Leather Ankle Boots, the Pryle Booties and Pryle Block Heel Booties, and the Hampstead Leather Ankle Boots are the ankle group. I would wear any of them with straight jeans and a trench.

The riding side is the Suede Cavalier Boots, Leather Cavalier Boots, Leather Cavalier Heel Boots and the two Soft Saddle Low Boots. Try the pair on with the trousers you actually own, and check that the shaft clears your calf without pinching.

Ballet flats, loafers and pumps

Daniel Lee became Chief Creative Officer in October 2022, and in February 2023 the brand launched a new wordmark and a refreshed Equestrian Knight Design, a mark that has existed since 1901. I like that the Knight carries the Latin word Prorsum, which means Forward, because Burberry says the design was chosen through a public competition in the early 1900s. It is a nice thing to know when you are looking at a pair of flats, since the details are small.

The second group is the shoes for a desk, a dinner or a long walk between meetings. The Highgate Ballet Flats, Robin Flats and Robin Check Ballet Flats are the plain, easy ones. The Check Canvas Highgate Ballerinas and the Check Fawn Ballerinas put the check front and center, and the Highgate Bouclé Ballet Flats go softer and textured. I would wear the check versions with a plain navy knit and let them be the only pattern in the outfit.

Then the strap and the pump family. The Check Strap Leather Robin Shoes and Check Strap Leather Robin Ballerinas add a strap that keeps a flat on your heel, which is the fitting-room test for any ballerina: walk across the room and see if it slips. The Check Dame Low Pumps, Check Dame Pumps, Check Dame Slingback Pumps and plain Dame Pumps are the pointed side of the shop, and the Leather Cotswolds Low Pumps are the low heel I would choose for a day on my feet.

The loafers are the Opal Check & Leather Loafers and Leather Opal Loafers, plus the Opal Check Mule Flats for a backless version. They are good with a slip dress or tailoring, and I would try them with and without socks before deciding.

Slides, clogs and sandals

Burberry says Daniel Lee's debut collection, shown at London Fashion Week in a custom tent in Kennington Park, introduced a broader shoe offer including equestrian and rubber rain boots, plus sandals, mules and pumps in faux fur and shearling. That is where the third group comes from, and it is my favorite one to wear in summer and on the way to the airport.

The Burberry slides women will spot first in this grid are the Check Slides and the Check Slide Sandals, with the Urchin Check Slide Sandals and the Furley Logo Slide Sandals close behind. I like a slide with jeans and a white tee, or with a long skirt. Slip them on, then walk down the stairs, and if your heel slides off the back, go for a different shape. The Pavilion Check Thong Sandals and Check Pavilion Sandals are for people who prefer a strap between the toes, and the Urchin Suede Sandals are the soft, plain option.

The clogs are the surprise. The Urchin Clogs and Urchin Check Clogs are the simple ones, the Check Suede Urchin Clogs add suede, and the Urchin Check Shearling Clogs and Check Shearling Urchin Clogs are the warm, lined pair for a cold apartment and a quick trip downstairs. I would wear shearling with thick socks and a long coat.

What I would skip: wearing any of these slides, thong sandals or suede pairs in heavy rain. Rain is a job for the rubber boots in the first group, so keep these for dry days and rotate them with the boots.

How I would choose a pair

A pair is right when you have a clear day in mind for it. For a wet commute, I would go to the rubber boots first. Wirecutter's rain boot guide advises choosing rubber over PVC for durability, since PVC can crack and warp, and says a rounded toe is more comfortable to walk in than a narrow, tapered one.

For the rest, try them at the end of the day, when your feet are at their biggest, and walk on a hard floor. Check the heel for slipping, the toe for room and the strap for pressure. If you like only one pattern in your outfit, let the check be on the shoe.

Burberry also says its newer signature color is Knight Blue, a small detail worth knowing when you scan the colors. I would keep an open mind about all three groups, and pick the pair that fits the week you have.
