Who is Camilla Nickerson

Camilla Nickerson is a stylist and long-time American Vogue contributing editor whose career spans magazine stories, runway shows and campaigns. She began at The Face in London. The Gentlewoman traces her route from Tatler in 1982, to British Vogue as a full-time fashion assistant at 17, and to US Vogue in 1992.

BoF records that she styled about 30 American Vogue covers and coedited Fashion: Photography of the Nineties with Neville Wakefield. She also styled Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz for George Michael's Freedom 90 video.

How Camilla Nickerson uses soft tailoring and texture

Nickerson's June 2024 British Vogue shoot with Sophie Turner makes the case for softer tailoring. She said tailoring can give a woman a sense of empowerment, then chose deconstructed, fluid pieces from Wales Bonner, Another Tomorrow and Stella McCartney.

That idea maps neatly onto winter dressing: set a defined jacket or coat against a soft knit, then finish with a strong bag or boot. Art Partner lists her work with Givenchy, Toteme, McQueen, Celine, Chloé, Marni and Proenza Schouler, so there are plenty of signature references to draw from.

Where I would start with Camilla Nickerson's style

I would start with the Givenchy coat and a soft wool knit, then let one sculptural accessory change the mood. Her styling shows how clothes can carry a point of view beyond the outfit. Leave one element a little undone.
