Car Coats: Short Structured Coats in Camel, Charcoal and Plaid

Car coats are short, structured coats, here in camel, charcoal, cream and plaid. I show how to wear them with denim, trousers and knit dresses all season.

A car coat sits somewhere between a jacket and a full length topcoat, usually landing at the hip or upper thigh. It was originally cut short so drivers could sit comfortably, and that practical length is exactly why it works so well now. It covers a chunky sweater without swallowing your shape, it does not drag when you sit on the train, and it looks right over straight jeans, wide trousers and midi skirts alike. Look for a clean collar, a single row of buttons and a fabric with some weight, like boiled wool, melton or a soft wool blend. Camel and charcoal are the easiest colors to wear daily, while cream and plaid feel a little more special. Because the shape is so simple, small details matter, so pay attention to pocket placement, shoulder fit and how the hem falls when it is buttoned.

The car coat is at its best with a straight or slightly relaxed leg, so the hem lines up neatly with the top of your trousers. A turtleneck or crewneck sweater underneath keeps the neckline clean. For a dress, choose a midi length so the coat reads as intentional rather than too short. Loafers, ankle boots and simple sneakers all work, which makes it one of the most versatile layers you can buy for colder months.

Our honest take

Our honest take is that a car coat is the most useful outerwear shape for anyone who drives, commutes or simply hates fighting a long hem. We would start with camel or charcoal in a wool blend that feels substantial but not stiff. Try it on over your thickest sweater before committing, since a slightly roomier fit looks more modern than a snug one. Plaid and cream versions are lovely second coats once the basic is covered. If you only buy one new coat this year, this is the shape we think earns its spot first. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Winter Coats vs Designer Winter Coats and Statement Coats.
