A card holder edit in three parts: slim designer cases, zip and flap styles, and pre-owned Chanel, Hermès, Goyard and Louis Vuitton. I say which one I would carry, where it fits and what to check before you buy.
Card Holder: Slim Slots, Zip Cases and Pre-Owned Classics, All From One Forgotten Wallet

In 1949, a businessman named Frank McNamara forgot his wallet while dining out at a New York restaurant. The next February he went back to Major's Cabin Grill with his partner, Ralph Schneider, and paid with a small cardboard card. That was the first Diners Club card, and in its first year it reached 10,000 members. Every card holder on this page exists because of one forgotten wallet. I love that.
A card holder is the smallest thing I carry and the one I touch most. It has to slide into a coat pocket, open with one thumb and still look good on a dinner table. The slim designer card holder is the easy place to begin: a flat piece of leather, a few slots, nothing to fiddle with. Bottega Veneta built a house on that kind of restraint. It was founded in Vicenza in 1966, made its name with bags that had no logo, and introduced its woven Intrecciato leather in 1975 with the line "When Your Own Initials are Enough."
The black Intrecciato case is the one I would buy if I only bought one. Saint Laurent's Cassandre case in wine patent wears the monogram the graphic designer Cassandre drew for the house in 1961, three intertwined initials that still look new. The red Valentino VLogo and the burgundy Miu Miu matelassé are the two I would pull out with a black dress. The Gucci Ophidia, in beige GG Supreme canvas with the Web stripe, is the most fun of the eight.
For quieter days there is the taupe Loewe Anagram, the black Jil Sander and the powder pink Balenciaga Cash with its white lettering. One test before you buy: load the slots with the cards you actually carry and look at it from the side. A good one stays flat.

When a zip earns its place
A zip makes sense the minute you carry anything that is not a card: a folded receipt, a house key, a coin from a trip. Coach knows this territory. The house was founded in New York in 1941 by six artisans, and small leather goods are still where it feels most at home.
Its denim zip-around with the crystal Signature is the playful one, and the powder pink version with the cherry charms is the one I would give as a gift. Tory Burch has two very different cases here: the Kira in warm white diamond quilting, soft and a little dressy, and the Charlie in black pebbled leather, which is the one I would trust in a gym bag.
The Kate Spade mini zip in chartreuse suede is the color I would not have chosen and keep coming back to. The Mansur Gavriel in Jasmine is a flat cream pouch that slips into the smallest bag. The Maison de Sabré in Pomegranate Plum has a knotted bead pull that is easy to find without looking, and the GANNI Bou in coffee brown is the only flap here, with a gold clasp and a ring charm.
Check the zip before anything else: run it around the corner twice and make sure it does not catch on the lining. What I would skip: a zip case for a tiny evening bag, where a flat holder sits better.

Pre-owned, from the old houses
This last set is all pre-owned, from houses whose small leather goods are worth hunting for. Goyard is my favorite story of the four. François Goyard renamed the business Maison Goyard in 1853, and his son Edmond created the Goyardine canvas in 1892. Its dots reference the log drives his ancestors worked, and they form a chevron in the shape of a Y, the middle letter of the family name.
The two Saint Sulpice holders, one red and one black, show that canvas at its best. Both are listed in excellent condition, and the red is the one I would reach for first, because it is the one I would find fastest at the bottom of a bag. Chanel comes in twice, both in quilted caviar: a black holder with a silver CC and a pink one with a gold CC. The black is listed with some corner wear, which I can live with on something that spends its life in a pocket.
The Hermès Calvi is an envelope of Epsom leather that closes with a flap, and I picked it twice: Vert Criquet, a pale green, and a warm tan Gold. Louis Vuitton rounds it out with a Damier Ebene holder in brown and the Daily card holder in Damier Azur, trimmed in Rose Ballerine pink.
With pre-owned, read the condition notes first, then look at the corners and the slot edges in every photo, because that is where a card case shows its age. If the heat stamp is not shown, ask for a close-up before you buy.

How I would choose one
Count your cards first. If it is three or four, a flat leather card holder from the first set is all you need. If you also carry keys, receipts or coins, go to the zips. If you want one of the old houses, go pre-owned and be picky about corners.
Then think about where it lives. A pocket wants something flat and slim, and a big tote wants a color you can spot fast. McNamara only needed one cardboard card. Most of us need room for a few more, and a holder that still closes flat when we do. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Coach Wallet and Chanel Wallet Guide.
If a slim case is what you are after, I also sorted a Gucci card holder for women, from Flora canvas to GG Marmont.
