I think cargo pants have grown up. The pockets are still there, but now they come in heavy canvas, ripstop and washed twill that hang properly, and that is what makes them work on a guy who also owns a blazer.

 

My pick for a first pair is the Alpha Industries ACU in brown or the Levi's Extra Baggy in green, since both have room and a clean line. If you want the dressier version, look at Stone Island's ripstop pair, the Nahmias olive pair and the black Y-3 pair, which I find are cut with real structure. AMI's beige trousers are the easiest to wear with a white shirt. Keep the top simple, like a Filson flannel or a plain tee, and finish with boots or clean white sneakers. A belt in the same color as your shoes ties it together.
