Cargo pants have stopped being a joke and started being the pair I reach for most. The trick is to let the pockets do the talking and keep everything else quiet, a plain white tank, a fitted tee, a clean sneaker or a pointed flat.

 

For the easiest version I like Free People's Reef curved cargo in navy, which gives you a little barrel shape without feeling bulky. AMO's Colette in olive is the classic army shade, and Reformation's Sawyer in red is what I wear when I want the pants to be the outfit. If you want to dress them up, L'AGENCE's Isolde in faux leather works with a heel and a blazer. Look for a drawstring hem or a wide leg, and check that the pockets lie flat when you stand.
