Cashmere menswear is back, with Vogue reporting that premium yarns like cashmere now make up a third of luxury knitwear sellouts. I go through rollnecks, zip-ups, polos and a cashmere hoodie, and how to wear cashmere like it is cotton.

Cashmere Menswear: Rollnecks, Zip-Ups, Polos and a Hoodie
Rollnecks, Half-Zips and Plain Sweaters
Cashmere reached France in the luggage of Napoleon's soldiers after the Egyptian campaign of 1798 to 1801, and Josephine became one of its most famous early collectors. Napoleon.org says she first judged the shawls ugly and then amassed a huge collection, and she was painted in a white dress and red cashmere shawl in a portrait finished in 1809. Two centuries later the fashion crowd is chasing the same softness. Vogue reported in July, citing EDITED, that premium yarns like cashmere now make up a third of knitwear sellouts across luxury retailers, with 2026 knitwear sellouts up 40% at Loro Piana. GQ's fall sweater guide adds that after years of quiet luxury neutrals, designers are making the case for harder-to-ignore colors. Most cashmere comes from Mongolia and China, and Vogue Business counts about four goats for a single sweater, which is a good reason to buy fewer and choose better. Start with grid one. Paul Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970, about three by three meters with no windows, and the navy rollneck is exactly what I would hope to find in a room that small. Dunhill's gray rollneck and Sunspel's brown half-zip sit alongside it. Wear the rollneck under an unlined jacket and leave the collar alone. What I would skip is the Mr P. wool polo sweater if softness is the whole point, because it is wool and this edit is about the other fiber.

N.Peal is the brand I would study in this grid. Nat Peal opened it in March 1936 as a men's haberdashery in London's Burlington Arcade, and by the 1950s he was being called the King of British Cashmere. Production today runs from goat to garment, in Mongolia and China. The Birdseye zip-up cardigan in gray is the piece I would pull out first: it does the work of a jacket without asking you to button anything. Brunello Cucinelli has an even better origin story. He started the company in 1978 with colored cashmere knitwear, which was unusual then, and in 1985 bought a ruined fourteenth-century castle in Solomeo, Umbria, to run it from. His beige sweater in this grid is the plain version of that ambition. For something with a little more texture, The Elder Statesman's cream waffle-knit Henley comes from Greg Chait, who began in 2007 with cashmere blankets and still makes most product in downtown Los Angeles. Wear a zip-up over a white tee and keep the trousers dark. What I would skip is the red Barena sweater when you need to disappear under a navy blazer, because red like that announces itself at the collar.

PIACENZA 1733 is the oldest name in this edit, a wool mill in Pollone, in Italy's Biella district, whose founding date is right there in the brand name. It is still family-run and belongs to Les Henokiens, the club of family firms at least two centuries old, and Mario and Guido Piacenza's travels led to cashmere goat undercoat in the Himalayas. The ribbed half-zip in gray is the one I would buy from this grid. Then the other end of the spectrum: Aimé Leon Dore, which Teddy Santis started in Queens in March 2014 and which mixes hip hop, basketball and a childhood split between Queens and Greece. Its navy cashmere-blend sweatpants are the grown-up version of that. Peter Millar began in 2001 with a single cashmere sweater sold in many colors, so the Crown Heritage hoodie in gray is on brand. Wear cashmere sweatpants with a plain tee and clean sneakers, and test them by sitting down: the hem should not pool over the shoe. What I would skip is the AMI logo-embroidered cardigan for a day when you want to go unremarked, because the embroidery is the first thing anyone reads.

Cashmere Polos and a Knitted T-Shirt
A cashmere polo is what you wear when a T-shirt is too casual and a sweater is too warm. Sunspel is the obvious place to look: Thomas Hill founded it in 1860, and in 1955 Peter Hill created the cotton mesh Q75 on disused lacemaking machines, the fabric behind the Riviera Polo that Daniel Craig wore in Casino Royale. The brown cashmere version here is its quieter cousin. FEDELI started in Monza in 1934 as a hat maker, made its first cashmere garments in 1948 and leaned into the fiber from the 1970s, so the gray Sportman polo in cashmere and silk comes from people who have been at it a long time. James Perse launched in 1994 with a T-shirt sold at Maxfield in Los Angeles, and his gray cashmere polo has the same easy, plain feel. Orlebar Brown's Bresson in navy is a London label's take, from a brand founded in 2007 for swim shorts. Wear any of these tucked loosely under a navy blazer. What I would skip is the Mr P. knitted cashmere T-shirt for anything that makes you sweat, because it belongs at a dinner table, not a gym.

Wear Cashmere Like It Is Cotton
The mistake with cashmere is treating it as a special occasion. Josephine wore hers in a portrait and Napoleon's soldiers carried theirs home, but the best sweaters in this edit are the ones that get worn on a Tuesday. If you are building from nothing, go in this order: a navy rollneck from Rubinacci or Paul Smith, a gray crewneck from James Perse or Auralee, one zip-up cardigan from N.Peal, and a polo for warm days. That is four pieces and it covers most of the year. Add a color when you are ready, since GQ says designers are now making the case for harder-to-ignore shades. A brown Kaptain Sunshine sweater or a purple Slowear Zanone is a good second step. Keep the rest quiet, with dark trousers and plain shoes, and let the fiber do the talking. I like that the best of these houses, from William Lockie in Hawick to Piacenza in Biella, built their reputations slowly, one winter at a time. Cashmere rewards the same patience from the person wearing it.
More Cashmere Sweaters, Polos and a Hoodie
If cashmere should be worn like cotton, then the sweaters on this last rack are the everyday ones. Mr P. has a cashmere rollneck, N.Peal the Conduit cashmere and silk-blend sweater and the Oxford, and Begg x Co the Brennan and the Maytime cable-knit. Auralee adds two quieter sweaters, one brushed and one with silk, and Ghiaia Cashmere has a plain cashmere sweater. For warm days, the Paul Smith and PIACENZA 1733 polo sweaters take the place of a shirt, and the James Perse cashmere hoodie is the one for the weekend. What I would skip: the Maytime cable-knit under a heavy coat, since the extra bulk will get in the way.
