Casual Date Night Outfits: A 1928 Motorcycle Jacket Meets Dinner

Casual date night outfits can move from fitted knits and dark denim to slip skirts, cropped jackets, and small bags. I built this edit around color and texture, with pieces that feel considered without turning dinner into a costume.

A jacket with a past

In 1928, Irving Schott introduced what his company calls the first modern leather motorcycle jacket. The jacket was made for Beck Distributors, a Harley-Davidson distributor in Long Island, New York. It started on the road, which is a more interesting origin for dinner clothes than another dress-code rule. I like an outfit with a clear idea and no unnecessary ceremony.

Casual date night outfits, to me, start with how much attention I want a color to take. Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta's 2008 study photographed women wearing red or blue shirts and found men rated the women in red more attractive and sexually desirable. The same report says red did not alter ratings of likability, intelligence or kindness, and women's ratings of other women did not shift. That is a very specific result about a set of photographs, not a universal style instruction. I would treat it as context, not a dress code.

The first set of knits gives that decision room. The Emmeline henley has dark-cherry ribbing, a button placket and contrast trim, so I would let the top bring the color and keep the bottom simple. The tan wool-blend turtleneck is a quieter option with a slim shape; the black Kelly ribbed top and Enza Costa crew tee are clean bases for a jacket or satin skirt. If a neckline is the detail, the blush cropped pullover has a funnel neck and an asymmetrical zip, while the white pointelle top adds scalloped edges without adding another color story.

I would check any fitted knit under the actual layer, sitting and standing, then make sure its hem meets the waistband cleanly. A little color goes a long way when the rest of the outfit feels like yours.

Dark jeans and leather pants

A jean's hem decides more than its wash once you add an ankle boot. Andrew Elliot and Daniela Niesta's 2008 experiment changed the shirt in a photograph from blue to red; men's ratings of attraction increased, but their ratings of likability, intelligence and kindness did not. That's a narrow finding about photographs, not a styling instruction. I would choose the color because I like it, then let the cut set the tone.

Veronica Beard's Milla is a dark-indigo straight ankle jean, a clean counterpoint to a close black top. L'AGENCE's Selma has a long Columbia bootcut line; DL1961's Bridget takes that shape close to black in Night Out. MOTHER's Outsider is a dark wash with a subtler bootcut for less flare. If the evening can hold a sharper finish, rag & bone's Kinsley and Veronica Beard's Beverly are black faux leather in low and high rises, while Cinq à Sept's Stevie brings deep malachite to a straight leg.

I would balance any bootcut with a fitted knit and a jacket that ends above the thigh, then look at the hem with the shoes on. Check the rise sitting down and standing back up, so the waistband stays comfortable and the leg doesn't stack at the instep. What I would skip: a long flare under a jacket that stops at the widest point of the hip, if the layers make the silhouette feel crowded.

Slip skirts and midi dresses

A bias cut gives a skirt movement without asking the top to compete. I would pair a fluid hem with a close rib knit, then keep the shoe simple enough that it can handle the walk to dinner. The small test I like is whether the hem clears the top of the boot instead of catching on it.

DÔEN's Elowen gives brown-and-cream silk a floral lace edge and elastic waist; it has enough detail for a plain sweater. Favorite Daughter's navy satin midi makes the same combination a little quieter, while the brown-mole satin skirt is machine washable and should dry flat. Vince's black rose and oak buff check adds pattern in a low-contrast way. If I want one piece instead, Eileen Fisher's graphite oval dress combines matte and shiny silk, and Vince's night-navy rib-knit midi has a scoop neckline and below-knee hem. Veronica Beard's rust stripes and Elie Tahari's red pointelle bring color forward.

Before choosing the length, I would check the skirt against both the boot and the flat I might actually wear, then sit to see whether the waist stays in place. Pair the more ornate lace with a plain top, or let the striped dress stand alone. What I would skip: stacking lace, shine and a patterned knit when I want the outfit to feel quiet.

Cropped jackets and blazers

A jacket is the useful part of the outfit before it becomes the headline. Schott's history says the company became the first manufacturer to put a zipper on a jacket in 1925, a practical change for fit and weather protection. I like that origin for a night out: choose the layer for what it does on the walk, then let its shape sharpen the clothes underneath.

The green plaid double-breasted knit blazer gives jeans a little structure without a hard contrast. The beige-silver cropped textured jacket is more relaxed, with a zip front and flap pockets; Eileen Fisher's twine boiled-wool jacket keeps its stand collar and patch pockets simple. Wit & Wisdom's dark-indigo crop blazer has peaked lapels, while Avec Les Filles' navy argyle brings a pattern that still reads as a layer, not a full outfit. Cinq à Sept's black knit blazer has a faux-pearl lapel brooch for the one-detail person. BLANKNYC's cinnamon suede is boxy and short; Generation Love's black faux-leather jacket has an open front.

I would look at the shoulder and sleeve length over the sweater I plan to wear, then check where a cropped hem lands against the rise of the jeans or the waist of a skirt. A one-button blazer will work differently with a slip skirt than a zip jacket over denim, so I would decide which line should lead before leaving the house.

Boots, flats and small bags

The last check is a small one: does the shoe and bag feel like they belong to the same evening without matching each other. Coach's history begins in New York in 1941 with six artisans, and Bonnie Cashin became its first lead designer in 1962. That craft-minded beginning is a useful backdrop for keeping the accessories considered, not overworked.

Vince's Hailey black leather bootie has a square toe and a set-back heel; Steve Madden's chestnut suede Define offers another short shaft and low block heel. Bed Stu's Yurisa is black vegetable-tanned leather with a red lining, while Sam Edelman's Cafe Noir Mary Jane adds a faux-fur trim and an adjustable strap. Birdies' black velvet Hummingbird has an elastic strap for a quieter flat. For a little bag, Coach's Tabby Shoulder Bag 20 is black pebbled leather with two detachable carry straps. Tory Burch's Bunny Knot bag uses hand-placed quilted knots; the small Charlie has gold T hardware and a removable crossbody strap.

I would compare the shoe's shaft and toe with the hem in a full-length mirror, then adjust a small bag across the shoulder with the coat on. A strap that stays clear of a sleeve is the detail you notice after the door closes.

A plan for the evening

On an ordinary dinner plan, I would dress in this order: choose the knit, decide between dark denim and a skirt, add a cropped layer if the weather asks for it, then choose the shoe that suits the walk. The bag comes last, sized for the few things I actually want with me. One strong color is enough. Dark cherry at the top, red in a fine knit, or a plain black shoe can do the work without a second statement piece.

Schott's first modern motorcycle jacket was made for a Long Island distributor before it became a fashion reference. I like that the story began with a problem to solve. My own version can start with dinner and end with a jacket I would keep by the door.
