A men's chino edit in stone, navy, olive and khaki, from straight fits to slim twills. They sit between a jean and a suit trouser, so they go to the office and the weekend.

A chino is the pant I tell every guy to get right before anything else. It sits between a jean and a suit trouser, which means it works for the office, a dinner and a weekend with the same pair of white sneakers. Stone, navy and olive cover almost everything, and I would add a sand or a washed khaki when you want something lighter.

 

For a clean everyday pair, the Polo Ralph Lauren straight fit in stone and the Marine Layer twill chino are the ones I would start with. Joe's Jeans makes its slim twill in navy, khaki and a soft tea leaf green, so the color choice is easy. Theory and Rag & Bone have the sharper, slimmer cuts for a blazer. Look for a little stretch and a hem that breaks just above the shoe, and the rest takes care of itself.
