Christmas Vacation Outfits: The Griswold Plan, Minus the Chaos

Christmas Vacation Outfits: The Griswold Plan, Minus the Chaos

For a winter family trip, Christmas vacation outfits should move from the car or gate to dinner without a suitcase of costume changes. I would start with a soft set, then add one patterned knit, a useful coat, and a dress that works with the boots already packed.

Packing for the family arrival

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is my cold-weather travel warning in miniature. In the 1989 film, Clark Griswold’s family lives in the Chicago suburbs, where his plans for a big Christmas become a parade of mishaps. It is not, technically, a travel movie. Still, I like the reminder that the arrival matters as much as the plan, especially when the whole family is trying to get through one doorway with coats, gifts, and different ideas about what counts as festive.

AAA’s travel-forecast archive lists its December 10, 2025 report as the latest year-end holiday release. That forecast projected 122.4 million Americans would travel at least 50 miles between December 20 and January 1, with 109.5 million going by car and 89% of holiday travelers taking road trips. The numbers make me want outfits that can handle a stretch of sitting without looking like I dressed for a nap, then a quick change of silhouette once I reach the house.

For Christmas vacation outfits, I want a travel set with enough shape to look intentional and enough ease for the long part of the day. The dark gray cotton sweatshirt and sweatpants set has straight-leg pants and side pockets, so it feels less like a last-minute grab. The chocolate Aylia rib-knit set has a button-front top that can pass for a proper outfit. The gray Emelie knit pant set gives a tunic-length line, while the black Celestial set adds moon and star motifs for a small seasonal joke.

I would also keep the almond waffle boatneck set in mind for a clean neutral, or the army-green Mariner set when stripes sound more fun than another solid. Before choosing, I would check where the top hem meets the waistband and make sure the pants have a place for a phone. A useful travel uniform should survive the seat, the stop, and the family photo.

Fair Isle for the road

At a crowded gate, the sweater that works hardest is the one that layers without turning into a second coat. AAA’s 2025 outlook expected Christmas week to be busier on the roads than New Year’s week, with traffic-heavy days in both, so I would keep the knit easy to take off.

The brown-sugar melange Fair Isle cardigan from Vince Camuto has blue geometric bands, a small change of color over a dark travel set. Marine Layer’s French-blue and cream Fiorella cardigan has ribbed cuffs and a button front, which makes it the one I would keep near the top of my bag. The chocolate-and-pink AQUA cardigan is waist-length and cheerful without asking for a red-and-green theme. Splendid’s black Fina cardigan puts a cream yoke against a dark base, graphic enough for family photos but still easy with plain trousers.

For quieter pattern, the latte Fair-Isle-inspired cashmere sweater keeps the motif low contrast, while the navy Quince merino cardigan has gold buttons and a muted yoke. The ivory-pattern Fair Isle Henley gives a deeper placket and a relaxed shape. I would wear any of these with straight pants and simple earrings, then test the sleeve fit over the thinnest layer I expect to wear. What I would skip: a second statement print when the cardigan is already doing the holiday work.

Coats for the winter transfer

A coat has to make the handoff between car, curb, and dinner, so I would decide first whether I need a hood or a cleaner collar. AAA projected a record 8.03 million domestic air travelers for its 2025 year-end period, one more reason to expect layers on and off at the airport.

The caramel hooded wrap coat with removable down bib gives two ways to wear the front, while the heather-charcoal cocoon coat keeps its shawl collar and hidden buttons quiet. The Shia Hooded Wool Coat adds an asymmetric zip and insulated inner bib, a sharper answer to the same weather problem. For a more compact shape, the midnight Ali Wool Peacoat has notched lapels and a back martingale belt. The black Junction Insulated Parka puts its pockets on a zip, with a cinch waist to define the outline.

I would lay each coat over the knit it will actually meet on the trip, then close every front and lift both arms; the shoulder should still move. A removable bib or hood earns its place when the plan changes from a long outdoor walk to a heated room. What I would skip: a long hoodless coat if the itinerary means wet curbside waits. My coat pick is the one that can cover a festive sweater without swallowing it.

Midi dresses for dinner

A dinner dress that packs well needs one clear idea, not a whole supporting cast. I would decide whether the room calls for knit, velvet, or a little shine, then match the hem to the boots I expect to wear.

The chocolate Seamless Midi Sweater Dress has an A-line skirt and crewneck, while the black ribbed crew midi has a back tie and a close, long line. The green-striped Pleated Long-Sleeve Midi combines a shirt collar with a pleated skirt, so it feels like dinner without a separate blouse. Purple velvet Raleigh adds a mock neck and side slit; the auburn burnout velvet midi keeps the same long-sleeve formality but swaps in raised floral texture.

For a softer knit, the chocolate cashmere midi is mid-calf, and the dark-oak STAUD dress mixes bright stripes with a collared V-neck. The oatmeal V-neck midi has an adjustable back tie. I would check the hem while seated, then stand and take a full step before deciding; a side slit or ribbed hem should still feel like your dress, not an obstacle. With these shapes, one coat and uncomplicated shoes are enough.

Boots, bags, and cold ears

The last-minute packing list is really a series of small decisions: which boots, which bag, and which hat can do double duty. Columbia says it acquired SOREL in 2000 and that the brand evolved from men’s utility boots into a contemporary lifestyle label, a neat bit of context for snow boots that are not shy about their shape.

The black Adirondack Boot XXV has a plush cuff and lace-up front; the Snow Angel pairs a faux-fur cuff with a rubber shell. The silver Pya Waterproof Puffer Boot uses a toggle closure, and the ceramic-black Ona Ave Alpine Snowcap adds a fleece lining. I would choose based on the actual walk, then check the shaft height against the pant hem and make sure laces or toggles are easy with gloves.

For the overnight pieces, the black Weekender has a padded tech sleeve and a separate bottom compartment; the natural Sloane Ranger has a zip top and adjustable shoulder strap. The black-and-camel Chunky Rib Micro Beanie is close fitting, while the gray Mongolian Cashmere Ribbed Beanie has an adjustable cuff. I would put the boots at the bottom of the bag only if there is room for them to sit without pressing on the knitwear; otherwise, wear the bulkiest pair and let the beanie take the small pocket.

Arrive without the production

I would pick the travel set first, because it decides how easy the car or airport part will be. Then I would pack the coat, the dinner dress, and only one patterned knit; the rest of the color can come from a scarf or earrings already in rotation.

The boots should match the walk, not an imagined version of the trip, and the weekender needs a place for the things I will want close by. That is enough of a plan. Clark Griswold tried to produce the ideal family Christmas; I would rather arrive with clothes I can move in and one less thing to carry through the doorway.
