Clarins Water Lip Stain and Other Stains That Survive Coffee

Clarins Water Lip Stain and Other Stains That Survive Coffee

The Clarins Water Lip Stain gives a matte, kiss-proof tint that looks like your lips after a cold walk. Here it sits with the long-wear stains, juicy tints and soft balms I would use for color that lasts through coffee and lunch.

Clarins started in Paris in 1954, when Jacques Courtin-Clarins opened a small beauty institute and began making treatments from plants. The brand grew up around the idea that skincare should feel good to use, and that thinking shows even in its makeup. The Clarins Water Lip Stain is a watery liquid that dries to a matte, kiss-proof tint with a barely-there feel. Violet Water, the shade here, is a vibrant berry that looks like a natural flush, and it stays put through coffee, lunch and a long commute.

The rest of this row is lip stains that dry down and stay. VIOLETTE_FR LIP NECTAR in Bêtise is a warm berry with high shine and squalane. Summer Fridays Flushed Lip Stain in Maple is a warm terracotta that is transfer-proof for hours. Wonderskin Wonder Blading in Divine is a full burgundy red, the most pigmented here. HUDA BEAUTY Lip Contour Lip Stain in Rosewood works as both stain and liner. Mango People Glossy Fruit Lip Stain in Beet Juice starts shiny and fades into a deep berry tint. Gucci Oil-In-Water Tint in Valeria Rose is a rosewood with a glowing finish, and Benefit Benetint in Rose is the rosy classic in a tiny bottle.

A quick test: after applying a stain, drink a glass of water and check the rim. A good stain leaves almost nothing behind.

Juicy lip tints

A lip tint is a little softer than a stain, with more shine and less staying power. It is the one I reach for on weekends, when I want color that looks like nothing.

Benefit Splashtint in Summer Fling is a mauve rose with a dewy finish that is also kiss-proof. Laka Fruity Glam Tint in Dewy is a muted mauve from Korea with a juicy glow. Kaja Jelly Charm in Squeeze Guava is a soft plum pink that works on lips and cheeks, and it clips onto a keychain. YSE Beauty Like A Gloss in Class Act is a warm berry with high shine. The 19/99 Beauty water tint in Parna is a sheer wash of color. French Girl Le Lip Tint in Claire is soft and natural. Victoria Beckham Beauty Bitten Lip Tint in Poupette gives that just-bitten look, and the Dolce & Gabbana Rose Dew Lip Bite is a glowy, hydrating tint.

Pairing tip: dab a tint on your cheeks too. Matching lips and cheeks is the fastest way to look awake on a gray morning.

What I would skip: layering a tint over a stain. The tint lifts the stain and both look patchy. Choose one or the other, then add a balm if you want shine.

Balms to wear over a stain

Stains can feel dry after a few hours, especially matte ones. A balm on top brings back the comfort without removing the color underneath.

Bobbi Brown Extra Lip Tinted Balm in Bare is colorless with peptides and plumping technology. Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm in Vanilla is the one everyone seems to carry. LANEIGE Lip Glowy Balm in Acai Mango Smoothie is light with shea butter. Nécessaire The Lip Balm has niacinamide, five ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and it is unscented. Augustinus Bader The Lip Balm is rich and soothing. HERMÈS Rouge Hermès Lip Care Balm is the treat. Le Labo Lip Balm comes in a simple tube, and fresh Sugar Lip Balm in Rose has sugar from beetroot and sugarcane with a sheer rosy tint.

How to use them: let the stain dry for a full two minutes, then press the balm on with a fingertip instead of swiping the tube across. Pressing keeps the stain in place.

What I would skip: a thick, oily balm over a stain right before a meal. It softens the stain and it transfers. Wait until after, or use a thin, light balm.

Keeping the stain looking fresh

Start with the Clarins stain in the morning and a light balm on top. That gives you color that lasts through coffee and lunch with no touch-ups. Add a juicy tint for weekends, when you want something softer. Keep the balm in your bag for the afternoon, and remember to take a stain off with an oil-based remover at night, since water alone will not do it. A stain is the lowest-effort way to have color on your lips all day, and it looks the most natural of anything here.

When I want shine on top of a stain, I reach for one of the Clarins Lip Comfort Oil shades.
