Deep Cloud Couch: Modular and Curved Sofas for Sinking In

A cloud couch started as one famous white sofa in 2015, and this edit sorts the overstuffed sofas, the modular sectionals and the curved, rounded shapes. I go through seat depth, cushions and scale, with a note on measuring your doorway.

Where the cloud couch came from

The sofa that started all of this was launched in 2015. Architectural Digest reports that the Cloud Sofa, often called the cloud couch, came from RH, and that London designer Timothy Oulton conceived it as part of his quest to build the ultimate sofa. It took over seven years to design. It is also modular: three cubes, a corner, an armless section and an ottoman, that you can buy in multiples and add to over time.

Since then the name has become shorthand. House Digest describes a cloud couch as any sofa with a soft, sink-in quality, and on social media it is usually white or gray with deep seats, low armrests and down cushions. The cloudcouch hashtag had passed 153.2 million views on TikTok when House Digest reported on it in February 2023. I find that more interesting than the sofas themselves: a whole room-sized idea spread because people wanted somewhere to land at the end of the day.

Depth is the thing to shop on. Good Housekeeping's Institute says deep couches typically have seat cushions 28 to 35 inches deep, and that you should shop on seat depth rather than frame depth. Seat depth is simply the distance from the front edge of the seat to the back cushion. Sit down in a showroom with your back against the cushion and check where the edge meets the back of your knee.

This first group is the full-size sofas, from the plush end to the more tailored. The Bernhardt Osbourne Fabric Sofa and the Bernhardt Downey Fabric Sofa come from a company that says it was founded in 1889 by John Mathias Bernhardt and is headquartered in Lenoir, North Carolina. Giuseppe Nicoletti brings the Tesoro Fabric Sofa and the Hollister Maxi Fabric Sofa, and the word Maxi tells you what to expect in scale. The Luonto Winslow Sofa sits in the same family.

Then there are the numbered ones: the Radley 86-Inch Fabric Sofa, the Brenalee 93-Inch Performance Fabric Slipcover Sofa with Four Pillows, the Teddie 91-Inch Fabric Sofa and the Hudson Park Collection Bowery 78-Inch Fabric Bench Cushion Sofa. Read the inches before you read anything else. The Brea Estate Sofa and the Brea Fabric Sofa round out the core of the group, and I would put tape on the floor for any of them before deciding.

The Rory 93-Inch Fabric Sofa, the Hudson Park Collection Astor 92-Inch Fabric Sofa and Bowery 88-Inch Bench Cushion Sofa, the Max Home Lauren Fabric Sofa and the Bernhardt Emery Fabric Sofa are the newer additions. They add a deep navy chenille, a low caramel sofa, a white slipcover look and a loose-cushion greige.

Sectionals and modular pieces, and how to size them

Sectionals are where this idea becomes practical. Architectural Digest calls the modular sectional the jack-of-all-trades of seating: an L can become a U, or be reconfigured into single seats and loveseats. ELLE Decor describes a modular sofa as a piece of furniture with several interchangeable parts that let you personalize your seat. That is the real appeal to me. You are not committing to one shape forever.

The Giuseppe Nicoletti Ballare Modular Fabric Sectional is the clearest example of the idea in this group, and the Ravello 2-Piece Fabric Sectional and the Luna 2 Piece Fabric Sectional from the same maker are the more compact takes. If you have a smaller living room, two pieces is a good place to begin, because you can see how the corner sits before you add anything. The Bernhardt Selma 2-Piece Fabric Sectional is the one I would look at for a room with a lot of straight lines.

For a bigger space, look at the Chateau d'Ax Nonna Three Piece Fabric Sectional and the Santino 3-Piece Fabric Sectional, and the Massoud Wilmer 3-Piece Fabric Sectional. Three pieces gives you a longer run along a wall, so measure that wall first and leave room for a side table. The Hudson Park Collection Bowery 2-Piece Fabric Sectional is the quieter one, a good match for a room that already has a lot going on.

The last four are house designs, and their names tell you most of what you need. The Rory 4-Piece Fabric Sectional and the Brea 2-Piece Fabric Sectional are the straightforward ones, the Fog 3-Pc. Fabric Chaise Sectional Sofa Set adds a chaise for stretching out, and the Radley Fabric 5-Piece Sectional Sofa is the largest in the edit by piece count. Rooms with an open plan can take it. A narrow living room cannot.

The Bloomingdale's Whittier 2-Piece Fabric Sectional and the Max Home Paige 3-Piece Fabric Sectional are the house options for a corner, while the Massoud Savoy 2-Piece and the Bernhardt Belvedere 2-Piece Fabric Sectionals sit at the grander end of the group.

Before you buy any of these, measure your doorways and hallways, and remember that a piece that is too large can sometimes get through if you take the door off its hinges. Sectionals arrive in pieces for exactly that reason, which is a quiet advantage.

Curved and rounded shapes for softer rooms

Not every soft sofa has to be square. This last group is curved and rounded, and it changes how a room feels: fewer corners, more of a gentle shape to walk around. These are the ones I would put in the middle of a space, with a rug under the front legs and room to pass behind.

The Jonathan Adler Ether Cloud Settee is the one that gives the group its name, and a settee is a smaller idea than a sofa, so it suits an entry or a bedroom end. The Caracole Cocoon Sofa and the Caracole Formosa 94-Inch Sofa are the larger pair, with the Formosa telling you its length right in the name.

Moe's Home Collection has three here: the Excelsior Sofa, the Thora Sofa and the Faye Sofa, Tan Faux Mohair. The Faye is the only one in this group with a named fabric, so I would ask to see it in person and run a hand along it before deciding. The Kartell Lunam Fabric Sofa is the sculptural one, and the Eichholtz Brice Fabric Sofa is the one to try in a room with dark wood or a deep wall color.

The Ethnicraft Ellipse 3 Seater Sofa and the Jonathan Adler Ether Curved Fabric Sofa are the two most sculptural, while the Bernhardt Loft Devon and Mercer Fabric Sofas are the softer, more livable curves.

What I would skip: a curved sofa in a room with a lot of straight walls and a narrow footprint. A rounded back needs air around it, so it can look awkward pushed flat against a wall. I would also skip buying one without checking the seat depth and the arm height, since a curve can hide a very different seat from the one you assume. Sit on it, then stand and walk around it.

How I would choose one for my own room

Here is how I would choose. Start with the room: measure the wall, the doorway and the hallway, and mark the footprint on the floor with tape. Then decide how deep you want the seat, and check it against that 28 to 35 inch range rather than the frame size.

Next, think about the fill. House Beautiful's designers say a down-wrapped foam or fiber cushion keeps its shape far better than all-down, which needs re-fluffing every time you stand up, and they note down has a sink-in feel that foam or fiber do not. That is a trade I can live with, but you should decide on purpose.

If the household is busy, Wirecutter says most stain-resistant upholstery is polyester, acrylic or polypropylene, and may carry a barrier that makes liquid bead up. I would only trust that when the product name says Performance, as the Brenalee does. Otherwise, treat any light fabric with respect, and put a throw over the arm.

Last, sit on it for longer than feels polite. A good sofa should still make sense after ten minutes. Whichever of these couches you pick, sit on it for ten minutes first. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together The L-Shaped Couch and The Sofa Bed, Reconsidered.
