cocokind Electrolyte Water Cream: The Equity Researcher Behind It

cocokind Electrolyte Water Cream is the gel moisturizer from a brand built by a former equity researcher who mixed formulas at home. Here is the story behind cocokind and eleven more products, from creams and serums to cleansers and a mist.

Priscilla Tsai was an equity researcher at JP Morgan who spent her twenties fighting hormonal acne and could not find skincare that was gentle and also honest about what was inside. So she started experimenting with formulas at home, launched the company in 2015 and paid for it herself rather than raising venture money. In the first year she sold door to door to natural retailers, and in 2016 a limited matcha moisture stick went viral on Instagram. That history explains the brand's manner: plain labels, ingredient percentages spelled out and sustainability facts printed like a nutrition panel. It also explains cocokind Electrolyte Water Cream, which launched in December 2024. Tsai has said electrolytes went into the name because they are the core of the formula, a blend of magnesium PCA, zinc PCA and sodium PCA that the brand says supports skin's natural moisturizing factors alongside glycerin and beta-glucan. The brand describes a gel texture that absorbs quickly with a shine-free finish, which is what I want from a lightweight moisturizer under sunscreen. Below are twelve products, starting with four creams.

The treatment shelf

Grid two is the treatment shelf, and it asks for more attention than the first. The Beginner Retinol Gel 0.1% is the brand's gentle entry point: it says the gel uses a Tri-Retinoid Comfort Complex, was clinically tested for sensitive skin and pairs the retinoids with aloe, cica and squalane. Ease in slowly, starting every other night as the brand suggests, and wear sunscreen every morning. Anyone who is pregnant or trying to be should ask a doctor before using a retinoid, since the American Academy of Dermatology lists retinoids among the ingredients to avoid during pregnancy. The Ceramide Barrier Serum pairs squalane and beta-glucan with ceramides, the Vitamin C Glow Serum uses sea grape caviar extract with hyaluronic acid, and the Chlorophyll Discoloration Serum combines 1% alpha arbutin with chlorophyll, licorice root and panthenol, according to the brand. Tsai's formulating idea, which she calls a little bit often, is a good rule here: use the steady serums daily and the strong one sparingly.

A gel and three serums

Cleansing, toning and a mist

Grid three covers the wash and the finishing touches. The AHA Jelly Cleanser has 4% AHA from hibiscus flower acids and fermented grape extract, the brand says, with hyaluronic acid and glycerin alongside. The Oil to Milk Cleansing Balm turns milky when it meets water and is written to remove makeup without stripping. The Rosewater Facial Toner is a rose hydrosol the brand says can be used on the face, on the scalp or to set makeup, and the Glow Essence Spray adds sea grape caviar, blue algae and sea buckthorn. My tip is to use the balm first on makeup days and the jelly second.

What I would skip is using the AHA Jelly Cleanser and the retinol gel on the same night. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid can irritate skin, so give them separate evenings and watch how you feel.

A quieter idea of a routine

What I like about this brand is that it never pretends skincare needs to be complicated. Tsai has said she wants cocokind to be a safe place in the beauty industry where people are accepted exactly as they are, and in 2018 she started the cocokind Impact Foundation to give grants to other women founders. Electrolyte skincare is a trend, but the brand's habit of showing its numbers will outlast the trend. Start with the one product that solves your most annoying skin day and build out slowly from there.
