An upholstered ottoman and a hard top coffee table solve the same problem in opposite ways. How to pick the one your room actually needs.
Coffee Table Chic

The choice is between softness and surface
An upholstered ottoman and a hard top coffee table occupy the same spot in a room and answer completely different needs. An ottoman gives you a soft surface, extra seating when people arrive, and no corners at shin height, which matters in a room with small children or a tight walkway. What it does not give you is somewhere to put a full glass of wine. A hard top table gives you exactly that, plus a place to stack books, and takes a hot mug without a mark if the material allows. So the real question is what the middle of your room is for. If it is where people put their feet up and where the room needs one more seat at Christmas, the ottoman wins. If it is where drinks, remote controls and a laptop land, the table wins, and no tray fixes it.

The tray is the compromise, and it has limits
The standard answer is an ottoman plus a tray, and it genuinely works, but only within a range. A tray needs to be big enough to be stable and rigid enough not to flex when a full cup lands on it, which in practice means a solid wood or metal tray of at least 18 inches across, not a decorative rattan one. It also means the surface is only available where the tray is, so the ottoman is not a shelf, it is a spot. Storage ottomans add a second argument: a lift top hides blankets, controllers and toys, which is often more valuable in a family room than a display surface. The trade off is that you cannot leave anything on the lid, since everything has to come off to open it. Nesting or lift top hard tables solve the same problem from the other direction, with a surface that stays put and storage underneath.

Getting the size and clearance right
Both options follow the same geometry. Aim for a piece roughly two thirds the length of your sofa, and set the top at or just below the sofa seat height, which usually means 16 to 18 inches tall. Leave 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the piece so people can walk through and still reach a drink without leaning. If the ottoman is doing footstool duty, matching the seat height exactly is what makes it comfortable, and an inch too tall is enough to spoil it. In a small room, a round or oval shape buys back circulation space at the corners and is more forgiving of a bad walkway. Two smaller ottomans or nesting tables instead of one large piece is the most flexible answer of all, since they can split for extra seats and push together to act as one surface when they need to.

Our honest take
If you take one thing away, choose based on what lands in the middle of your room most evenings, because that is the decision, not the material. Feet and children point to an upholstered ottoman. Drinks, food and screens point to a hard top. Households with all of those are best served by two pieces that nest or a lift top table rather than one piece asked to do everything. If you do go with an ottoman, buy the good tray at the same time and treat it as part of the purchase rather than an accessory you will get around to. And choose a wipeable or tightly woven fabric on anything you intend to sit on, since an ottoman is the piece in the room most likely to take a spill from directly above.
