Color Depositing Conditioner: Brown, Red, Magenta and Blonde Picks

Color Depositing Conditioner: Brown, Red, Magenta and Blonde Picks

A color depositing conditioner lays a thin veil of direct dye over hair that is already close to the shade you want. This edit covers the brown, red and magenta refreshers, the masks, and the purple conditioners for brassy blondes.

The chemistry is simpler than the marketing. A color depositing conditioner is a conditioning base carrying the same kind of direct dye used in semi-permanent color, at a lower concentration. There is no developer, no lift, and no change to the structure of the hair. The pigment sits on the cuticle and fades with every wash, usually within four to eight shampoos depending on porosity and water temperature. That is why I think of it as a tinted gloss for the shower: it keeps a shade honest between appointments, and it will not cover the roots as they grow in or show up on dark virgin hair. The brands in this edit tend to come from people who lived the fade. Overtone was started by friends Maegan Scarlett and Liora Dudar, who launched in 2015 with the line that the product they wanted did not exist, so they made it. Celeb Luxury was started by the colorist Leland Hirsch, who co-founded ARTec in 1989 and came back in 2016 with a new system. The first four below are the everyday refreshers: magenta, merlot, chocolate brown and auburn.

Hair Gloss vs Color Depositing Conditioner: The Masks

The masks in this group sit between a treatment and a tint, and they are more forgiving if you like a gentle deposit. Moroccanoil, which grew out of Carmen Tal's own experience of a damaged color process and an argan oil treatment in a Tel Aviv salon, makes its mask in Cocoa and a mini in Copper, both described as dual-benefit: temporary color plus hydration and shine. Overtone's Royal Plum treatment mask is the boldest of the four and is meant to sit for about fifteen minutes. Virtue is the odd one out, and I want to be accurate about it. Its Colorkick is described as a color-maintaining, brass-busting mask made with natural colorants and no dyes, so it tones and protects rather than adding a new shade. Founder Melisse Shaban launched Virtue in 2017 around Alpha Keratin 60ku, a protein extracted from human hair that grew out of biotech research. My tip is to do a strand test behind the ear first, and keep gloves on for the plum.

Blonde, brass and the skip list

Brass is the same problem every blonde has, and these are the conditioners for it. Olaplex describes its purple toning conditioner as using micro-fine violet toning agents, made to work root to tip without weighing down the roots. Moroccanoil's Blonde Perfecting conditioner is pitched at blonde, lightened brunette and gray hair, while Pureology's Strength Cure version is aimed at brassy, damaged and lightened hair. Celeb Luxury's Extreme Blonditioner rounds out the set. A purple conditioner is not a dye job. It cancels yellow, and it works best when the hair is already light. What I would skip is leaving any of these on for an hour because the first timer felt short. Over-toning a porous blonde leaves a lavender cast that takes several washes to fade, so I would rather repeat a short, even application than chase depth in a single sitting.

A strand, a timer and cool water

The habits matter more than the bottle. Start with clean, product-free hair, because buildup stops pigment from sticking. Keep a timer nearby, and rinse with cool water until the water runs clear, since warm water strips what you just laid down. Colorlomo, Keracolor and Overtone each print their own guidance for how long to leave the conditioner in, and I would follow it to the minute. Anyone with a known sensitivity to hair dye should patch test first, the same as with any product carrying pigment.
