COOLA Sunscreen: Everyday Sunscreen, Explained

COOLA Sunscreen: Everyday Sunscreen, Explained

COOLA is the Southern California sunscreen brand Chris Birchby started because he wanted a sun product he would actually enjoy wearing every day. I like how practical it is, and this edit sorts the formats by the kind of day you are having.

The California idea behind COOLA

I like sunscreen stories that begin with a habit, and COOLA's is unusually practical. Chris Birchby wanted a sunscreen he would enjoy putting on every day after both of his parents were diagnosed with melanoma. His About page ties that need to a Southern California life spent outdoors, and the promise has stayed with daily protection and how the product feels: organic ingredients, light textures, nothing greasy.

I find that more convincing than beach-day theater. Early on, the founder remembers, the formulas were oxybenzone-free, and a newer look arrived with the 2024 refresh and the SPF Perfected platform. Still, the heart of it is the same small observation, which is that the best sun care is the kind you actually reach for. A California sun brand with an everyday product mix just makes sense to me.

A format for every sunny stretch

COOLA's strength is separating the sun routine into formats you can actually use. The Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 is the familiar, take-your-time step, the Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 makes sense for arms and legs when a day runs long, and the Classic Face Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 gives the face its own lane. The Mineral Liplux Lip Balm SPF30 Trio keeps lips in the mix, and the 4 Piece Organic Suncare Travel Set is an easy way to pack a routine.

My beach-bag daydream is a cool morning drive toward the coast, the face lotion up front and the lip trio tucked beside my sunglasses. Picture a day that goes from the farmers market to the sand, with the Travel Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 close at hand. The Classic Face Sunscreen Mist SPF 50 3.4 oz. and the Makeup Setting Spray SPF 30 are for the top-up when I would rather not rub anything in.

What I would skip: treating the formats as interchangeable. Each one has its own label, and I would read it.

Sun care that fits real life

I read COOLA as a brand built around the unglamorous part of sun care: remembering to do it. Birchby's original wish, a sunscreen good enough for every day, still gives the line its shape, and the different formats answer real situations from a beach bag to the morning commute. The packaging has a newer look now, but the Southern California thread is still visible in how it talks about outdoor days. I would choose a format that feels natural to reach for, then build a routine from there. Although I would probably still forget my lips.
