Cowboy Boots, Three Ways: Tall Tassels, Ankle Booties and Suede with Stitching

Cowboy Boots, Three Ways: Tall Tassels, Ankle Booties and Suede with Stitching

A guide to cowboy boots in three groups: tall and knee high pairs, ankle boots and booties, and suede, snake and embroidered styles. I talk through the history behind the shape, how each pair wears and what to leave on the shelf.

According to the story, cowboy boots as we know them started in 1875. Kansapedia, the Kansas Historical Society's encyclopedia, says company promotional materials tell of a Colorado cowboy who walked into Charles Hyer's shop in Olathe asking for boots with a pointed toe and a high, slanted heel, unlike the Civil War-style boots he had. Observer also dates one of the first known modern examples to 1875 and credits Hyer. I like that the whole thing begins with a customer who knew exactly what he wanted.

Most of the shape has a job. Bata Shoe Museum director Elizabeth Semmelhack says the tall top protects the leg and the heel keeps the foot in the stirrup. A North Carolina State University history essay says the narrow toe slid quickly into the stirrup, though Semmelhack points out the pointed toe only joined the design when pointy toes became fashionable for men in the 1890s to 1910s. So the toe is a debate, and the heel is not.

That is the honest starting point for cowboy boots today: they are workwear that turned into a fashion item. Tecovas notes that a standard pair has a shaft of about 12 inches, so the tall group below is where you get the full silhouette. The Madden Girl Stable Tall Western Boots and the Madden Girl Rodeo Cuffed Studded Tall Cowboy Boots are the straightforward ones, and the studding on the second is the loudest detail in the group. Marc Fisher LTD.'s Anirey Suede Western Knee High Boots and GUESS's Sashle Western Knee High Heeled Boot bring the movement, because the tassels on both swing when you walk.

Jessica Simpson has two here, the Piarin Tall Western Cowboy Boots and the Zuliena Tall Western Cowboy Boots. STAUD's Monty Knee High Western Boots is the clean, quiet option, and Dingo's Miss Daisy Knee-High Western Pointed-Toe Boots is the one for anyone who wants the sharp toe. Naturalizer's Brooke is the pair to look at if you want a tall boot offered in regular, narrow and extra wide. Then the GUESS Nianna Western Mid Calf Fold Over Boot, Blowfish Malibu's Stutter Western Tall Boots and the L'Artiste RODEOQUEEN-VIV, with embossed leather and a floral velvet shaft, round out the group.

With tall pairs, try the shaft against a straight jean and a slip dress in the fitting room. Check where the top lands against your knee when you sit.

Cowboy ankle boots and booties, short and sharp

The ankle group is where I would send anyone who is nervous about going full western. Tecovas says women's boots range from booties with virtually no shaft to over-the-knee designs, and this is the short end of that range. You get the pointed toe and the stacked heel without the shaft, which makes these easy under a wide leg trouser or a midi skirt.

Aeyde's Black Hedvig Cowboy Ankle Boots is the plainest and, to me, the most useful: black, sharp, goes with everything. Anna F. has two, the 40mm cowboy ankle boots and another pair with the same name, so look at both and pick by the line of the toe. The 40mm in the name is the heel, which is low enough to wear with a cropped jean and not feel like you are on stilts. Isabel Marant's Leyane Heeled Western Ankle Boots are a name Vogue singled out when it described a Western renaissance in women's boots, alongside Khaite and wearers like Bella Hadid.

Ash's Donovan western-style leather ankle boots and Forastero's Western Leather Booties are the leather pairs, simple and worn in quickly in the best way. Nine West's Weslie Suede Western Block Heel Booties and Zadig & Voltaire's Igata Suede Western Ankle Boots are the suede ones, and I would pick based on heel shape: the block heel on the Weslie is steadier, the Igata is more pointed.

Jessica Simpson's Paredisa Rhinestone Cowboy Booties is the sparkly one, and it is happiest with plain jeans and a white tee. Veronica Beard's Lisa Western Mid Heel Ankle Boots is the tailored pair, great under a trouser with a bit of break. Durango's Crush by Women's Distressed Shortie Western Boot has the weathered look, and Sam and Libby's Flash Block Heel Western Booties finish the group with an easy block heel.

Try the booties with the exact hem you plan to wear. Ankle boots live or die by where the jean ends.

Suede, snake and stitching, up close

Suede, snake and stitching are where western boots stop being practical and start being a statement about taste. Semmelhack says the decorative stitching on the boot top originally stiffened it, and Texas Farm Bureau's heritage magazine credits bootmaker H.J. Justin with sewing rows of stitches across tops in 1879 to stop them folding down. The practical stitch later became decoration, and you can see it in the DV Dolce Vita pairs here.

DV Dolce Vita's Given Contrast Stitch pair and Audray Whipstitch Western Boots are the most direct tribute, with the stitch as the main event. BERNESS's Tristen Croco-Print Western Boots is the texture pick, with a croc print that reads as pattern from far away. Jimmy Choo's Cece snake-effect leather pair, in multicolored, is the boldest thing in the edit, and I would build the rest of the outfit in one plain color around it.

The suede pairs are quieter. Etro's Logo suede pair in brown, Liu Jo's suede boots, Buttero's 55mm suede boots and Khaite's Clive suede boots all lean on the material. The 55mm in the Buttero name is the heel height, a moderate one, and Khaite is one of the labels Vogue named when it wrote about the Western renaissance. In a Vogue piece from October 2025, the magazine also described Beyonce's Cowboy Carter as a retail phenomenon that sent boots flying off shelves.

R.M.Williams recommends spraying clean suede boots with suede protector before the first wear and again every 2 to 3 months to keep water resistance. That is a tip I follow with every suede pair, and it takes a minute on day one.

What I would skip: pairing a detailed boot with a detailed everything else. A snake-effect or stitched pair wants a plain jean, a simple knit and maybe a trench. Also skip wearing suede on a day when rain is in the forecast.

How I would choose a pair

Here is how I would choose. Start with the shaft, then the toe, then the heel. A tall pair is a statement and wants simple clothes. An ankle pair is easy and works with nearly anything. A suede or stitched pair sits somewhere in the middle and does well with plain tailoring.

Western Horseman reports the 1980 film Urban Cowboy opened Western retail stores to all sorts of new customers, and that more than 10 million pairs of boots were sold that year. Boots have been a mainstream idea for a long time, which is a good reason to treat them as a regular part of the wardrobe rather than a costume.

Do a quick test before you commit. Walk across the room, sit down and stand up, and look at the pair from the side in a mirror. If the shape looks sharp from there, you have a good one. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Suede Boots Worth the Money and Sartore Boots.
