Curly hair products work best in layers, a cream for moisture, a gel for hold and a mist to bring curls back the next day. Here are the ones I would use at each step, from Fenty's hair line to Bounce Curl.
Curly Hair Products, Sorted by Step: Cream, Gel, Then Refresh

The modern curl routine traces back to Lorraine Massey, who opened the first Devachan salon in New York in 1994 and later wrote Curly Girl: The Handbook, which laid out a three-step method of cleanse, condition and style at a time when many women felt pressed to use flat irons or relaxers. The steps have loosened since, but the order still works, and most curly hair products now slot into it. Start with a cream. Moroccanoil, which began when Carmen Tal found argan oil in a Tel Aviv salon after a bad color job, makes the argan-rich one for all curl types. Fenty Hair, which Rihanna launched in June 2024 with nine products for a range of textures, makes The Homecurl, a gel-cream that shapes in one step. Bumble and bumble's cream is the moisturizing option, and Adwoa Beauty, which Julian Addo started with her own savings in 2017, makes Baomint, built on peppermint, wintergreen and baobab oil. Pick one based on your curl pattern, lighter for waves and richer for coils.

Gels for hold
Gel goes over the cream to lock the shape in while hair dries. Merian Odesho, who studied chemistry while preparing for dental school, formulates every Bounce Curl product herself, and her ceramide jelly defines and fights frizz for up to 72 hours; the brand arrived at Sephora in February 2026. Babba Rivera, the daughter of a hairdresser in Sweden, built Ceremonia around Latin American ingredients, and the pequi gel gives medium hold with shine. Fenty's Gelly Type is the strong one for sleek ponytails and slick backs. Kérastase, which launched in Paris salons in 1964, makes a gel-cream for volume and shape, a good middle ground if gels usually feel stiff on you.
Refreshing, and the skip
The last row keeps curls going between washes. Bumble's reactivator mist revives curls on day two, three and beyond, and Mizani, founded in Chicago in 1991 by Terri Gardner after listening to stylists in her community, makes a coconut refresher spray. Kérastase's leave-in cream strengthens and moisturizes, and Oribe's curl oil seals it all in, from the brand the Cuban-born stylist Oribe Canales started in 2008. What I would skip is brushing curls once they are dry. It breaks up the clumps and turns definition into frizz. Use your fingers, or a wide-tooth comb only in the shower.
Building your own routine
You do not need all twelve. Pick one cream, one gel and one refresher, and use them for two weeks before changing anything. On wash day, apply them to soaking wet hair in that order. Adjust the amount before you switch products, since most curl problems are about quantity. Take a photo on day one and day three so you can see what changed.
