Decorative Ponchos

Ponchos and capes with real detail, from paisley silk and tartan fringe to Fair Isle knits. An easy layer for anyone who likes a simple base with one standout piece on top.

A poncho or cape is the quickest way I know to make a plain outfit look planned. Under it I wear a black turtleneck and straight trousers, and the layer does all the talking. The ones I keep coming back to have a story in the weave, a paisley, a tartan, a fringe that moves when you walk.

 

Etro's printed silk ponchos are light enough for early fall, while Loro Piana's tartan fringe poncho and the Moncler Grenoble plaid cape are the real cold-weather investments. Burberry's check wool capes and the Brunello Cucinelli lamé style are quiet and polished. If you want something younger, try the Anna Sui handkerchief poncho, the MSGM Fair Isle cape sweater or Barbour's knitted cape with a slim jean and a boot.
