DIY Lash Extensions Without the Salon Appointment

DIY Lash Extensions Without the Salon Appointment

DIY lash extensions are clusters you place under your own lashes at home, and with a little practice they look close to a salon set. Here are the kits I would start with, the glues and self-stick lashes that make it easier, and the mascaras for days you skip them.

Salon lash extensions are one synthetic fiber glued to one natural lash, over and over, for a long appointment while you lie very still. They look beautiful. They also need a refill every few weeks, which is where a lot of us quietly gave up.

DIY lash extensions work differently. Instead of single fibers, you get small pre-made clusters, and you tuck them underneath your natural lash line rather than on top of it. Your own lashes hide the base, which is why a good set reads as real from across a table.

The category really grew up after Kasey Jackson started FlutterHabit with her husband, Tim, in 2019. Her kits come pre-mapped, so the clusters are already arranged short to long, and the Lash Extension Kit is made for up to ten days of wear per set. The Pre-Glued kit skips the adhesive step and lasts up to five days, a nice way to try the idea over a weekend.

Velour's Xtensions clusters are the most customizable here. Use one length for a rounded, doll-like shape, or step them longer toward the outer corner for a flared cat eye. Velour's self-stick clusters are pre-glued for up to three days. LYS Beauty's Press and Go clusters are the beginner pick, pre-glued and forgiving if your first try lands a little crooked.

Give yourself three practice runs before a big night. The first one always takes forever, and by the third you will be done before your coffee cools.

Glue, or no glue at all

If you are using clusters that are not pre-glued, the adhesive matters more than the lashes. A good one goes on clear, turns tacky quickly and holds all day without that stiff feeling at the lash line.

Lilly Lashes' brush-on adhesive is latex free and comes with a brush, so you paint a thin line instead of squeezing out a blob. Duo's Brush On Adhesive is the one makeup artists have kept in their kits for years, and the clear version disappears once it dries. Sephora Collection's lash glue is clear, fast drying and made to last up to 24 hours, the easy one to replace when you run out.

Then there are the lashes that skip glue entirely. Velour's self-adhesive strips sit on a pre-glued, pre-trimmed band you can reuse, and the two pack gives you a softer pair for daytime and a fuller one for going out. Lilly Lashes' self-adhesive half lashes and the House of Lashes wispy demi half lashes go on the outer part of the eye only, which is the most natural way to wear falsies at all. A half lash lifts the corner without looking like you tried very hard.

A small trick for any of them: warm the band between your fingers for a few seconds before you apply it. It bends to the curve of your eye instead of popping up at the ends, and it stays put through a long dinner.

The mascaras that fake it

Some days you will not want to fuss with clusters at all, and that is what the right mascara is for. The goal is length and separation, lashes that look like there are more of them, rather than thick clumpy volume.

Lancôme's Lash Idôle lifts every lash and fans them out without clumps. Benefit's They're Real is the lengthening classic, with a spiky tip on the wand for the tiny inner lashes. Ilia's Limitless Lash is a clean formula that lengthens without flaking. Prada's Pradascope is all about lift and clean definition, very close to the look of a fresh set.

For something more dramatic, Too Faced's Better Than Sex thickens lashes and holds a curl, and Yves Saint Laurent's Lash Clash in Uninhibited Brown gives big volume in a softer shade that reads more natural than black. Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes is vegan and curls noticeably.

If your lashes are straight and drop by lunch, Urban Decay's Tube Job is a tubing mascara. It wraps each lash in tiny polymer tubes that hold the curl, then slides off with warm water at night. If you like a touch of mascara on your natural lashes on cluster days, a tubing formula is the easiest to take off without rubbing near the glue.

Curl first, always, and hold the curler at the base for a slow count of five. Every mascara here looks better on lashes that have been curled, and the curl lasts longer when the mascara goes on within a minute.

Take them off gently

The part nobody talks about is removal, and it is where natural lashes get hurt. Never pull clusters off dry. Use the remover your kit recommends, hold it on the lash line for a minute so the bond softens, then slide the clusters away gently.

Give your lashes a night or two off between sets, keep the applicator clean, and throw away any cluster that has lost its shape. Wash your hands before you start, keep the glue away from the waterline, and if your eyes feel itchy or look red, take everything off and skip a few days. Treat your own lashes kindly and they will still be there, full and healthy, for the next set. The best compliment you can get is someone asking where you had them done.
