Eadem Lip Gloss, or Why Le Chouchou Is Really a Glossy Balm
Marie Kouadio Amouzame, born in Côte d'Ivoire and raised in France, and Alice Lin Glover, who is Taiwanese American, met at Google in 2014 and started Eadem in 2018 as a lifestyle blog for women of color. The name means the same in Latin. The brand launched in 2020 with one product, the Milk Marvel dark spot serum, made with a dermatologist and formulator who is a woman of color and tested on 50 women with darker skin tones. When people search for Eadem lip gloss, they usually mean Le Chouchou, a peptide lip balm that exfoliates and moisturizes and leaves a glossy finish, so it sits somewhere between the two. Butter Mochi and Sakura Shaved Ice are the two shades here. Topicals, founded by the pre-med students Olamide Olowe and Claudia Teng, makes Slick Salve, a minty glossy balm for soothing, and Rhode's peptide treatment was one of Hailey Bieber's three launch products in 2022. Reapply through the day, since balms wear faster than a long-wear gloss.
Four real glosses
If you want more shine and color, the second row is proper gloss. Sasha Plavsic developed Ilia in her parents' garage in Vancouver, and its first product in 2011 was a tinted lip balm, so Overglaze, a long-wear gloss, feels like a natural next step. Refy, from the influencer Jess Hunt and the entrepreneur Jenna Meek, began with a single brow product that sold out in under six weeks; its clear gloss adds hyaluronic acid. Lancôme was founded in 1935 by the perfumer Armand Petitjean, and JuicyTreat is an oil-in-gloss that works like a lip serum. Tom Ford's gloss, from the beauty line that launched in 2006, is high-shine and color-saturated, good over lipstick.
Gloss balms, and the skip
The last row blurs the line again. Dior's Lip Glow Butter is a gloss balm with a hint of color, from the house Christian Dior founded in 1946. Hourglass, founded by Carisa Janes in 2004 and fully vegan since 2020, makes Phantom, a glossy balm with full-bodied color. Priyanka Ganjoo named Kulfi after the frozen dessert she ate as a child in Delhi, and Lip Snack gives shine with a hint of color, while Glow Recipe's Glass Balm is a high-shine treatment from two founders who met at a beauty company in Korea. What I would skip is layering gloss over very dry lips. Exfoliate gently first, or the shine settles into every line.
Wearing it well
For a clean look, wear a glossy balm alone. For more color, line your lips first and add gloss only to the center. Keep a balm by the bed for overnight. Swap out any tube you have had for more than a year, and wear SPF on your lips outdoors. A gloss with no SPF gives no protection.
