Face Masks Skincare Fans Keep Coming Back To

The face masks skincare fans keep buying all do one of three jobs: clear out oily pores, flood dry skin with water overnight, or give a quick exfoliating reset. These are the clay masks, the sleeping masks and the sheet and exfoliating masks I would pick for each.

A face mask is the one skincare step that feels like a small event. You put it on, you sit still for ten minutes, and you are not allowed to check your phone. Part of the appeal is the ritual. The other part is that a good mask really does something in that time that a cleanser or serum cannot.

The trick with face masks skincare fans swear by is matching the mask to the day. Oily, congested skin wants clay. Dry, tight skin wants hydration. Dull skin wants exfoliation. Using the wrong one is how people decide masks do not work.

Clay masks come first because they are the oldest idea in the category. Kaolin and bentonite clays absorb oil and lift grime out of pores, and ten minutes is usually enough. Innisfree's Super Volcanic mask uses volcanic clusters with AHA, so it exfoliates while it absorbs. Kiehl's Rare Earth mask draws out excess oil while staying soothing, and Caudalie's Instant Detox mask visibly tightens pores in about ten minutes.

For a deeper clean, Origins' Clear Improvement uses active charcoal, and The Ordinary's Salicylic Acid 2% Masque pairs charcoal and clay with salicylic acid for dull, uneven texture. Murad's Rapid Relief mask uses sulfur and salicylic acid for breakouts. Benefit's POREfessional Deep Retreat is creamy and gentle, and OLEHENRIKSEN's Violet Ice Cold Plunge mask is the cooling one.

Put clay on your T-zone only if your cheeks are dry, and rinse it off before it cracks. Once it is bone dry, it can start pulling moisture from your skin, not just oil.

Sleeping masks do the work overnight

Sleeping masks are the laziest good habit in skincare. You put one on as the last step of your routine, go to bed, and wake up to skin that looks rested even when you are not. They work by sealing in water, so the hydration you put on skin stays there overnight instead of evaporating.

Summer Fridays' Jet Lag is a mask and a daily moisturizer at once, rich and plumping. LANEIGE, the Korean brand best known for its sleeping masks, has a Bouncy and Firm version with peony and collagen for a smoother, firmer look. Belif's Aqua Bomb has a jelly-pudding texture that feels cool and bouncy, perfect for dry, tired skin. Origins' Drink Up is thick and moisturizing with avocado butter and hyaluronic acid.

For more than hydration, Youth To The People's Superberry mask adds vitamin C for brightness, and Farmacy's 10% Niacinamide Night Mask smooths texture and refines the look of pores. Fresh's Floral Recovery mask calms the look of redness and roughness, with squalane and antioxidants.

Sephora Collection's Hyaluronic Acid sheet masks are the quick version, compostable and made for a second-skin fit. Keep a few in a drawer for mornings when your skin looks like it did not sleep.

Put a sleeping mask on a clean face after serum, and sleep on a fresh pillowcase. A thin layer is enough. If you wake up and it is still sitting on the surface, use less next time.

Sheet masks and the weekly reset

Sheet masks became a global habit thanks to Korean beauty, where they are a quick, everyday treat rather than a special occasion. A sheet holds a serum against your face for fifteen or twenty minutes, so it has time to sink in instead of drying on the surface.

SK-II's Facial Treatment Mask is soaked in the brand's Pitera essence, a moisture-boosting classic. LANEIGE's Cream Skin sheet mask layers hydration with ceramides, lovely for dry skin in winter. Biodance's Bio Collagen Real Deep Mask is a concentrated gel mask that hydrates and helps skin look firmer, and the Caviar PDRN mask is the richer version.

Exfoliating masks are the weekly reset. Drunk Elephant's Babyfacial combines 25% AHA and 2% BHA for a short, serious smoothing session. OLEHENRIKSEN's Dewtopia is also 25% AHA with PHA, for brightness and texture. Peter Thomas Roth's Pumpkin Enzyme mask uses fruit enzymes, a gentler way to exfoliate. Hanyul's Artemisia mask doubles as a foaming cleanser, calming and quick, the one to use on a weeknight when you want the ritual without the wait.

Use a strong exfoliating mask once a week at most, at night, and skip retinol and other acids that evening. Your skin will look polished the next morning, especially with sunscreen on top, since freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to the sun. Save the sheet masks for the night before something you care about, when you want your face to look like you slept ten hours.

A mask is a pause

I think of masks as a pause more than a product. Twice a week, ten or twenty minutes, one mask chosen for how your skin feels that day, not how it felt last month. Oily Monday, clay. Dry Thursday, sleeping mask. Dull Sunday, exfoliate.

Always start with a clean face, follow with moisturizer, and patch test anything strong on your jaw first. Keep two or three kinds on hand rather than a drawer full of one, and pay attention to how your skin looks the next morning, which tells you more than it does right after you rinse. The mask does its job fast. The quiet ten minutes with your feet up does the rest. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Slugging Skincare and Korean Skincare, One Step at a Time.
