Fall weddings call for something a little richer than summer florals. This year's guest dresses lean toward purple, long sleeves, beaded Art Deco glamour and dramatic volume. Here are the dresses, and the shoes and bags that finish them.

Fall 2026 Wedding Guest Dress Trends
What Guests Are Wearing This Fall
The fall wedding guest dress is getting moodier, with purple, covered-up shapes, beading and plenty of volume leading the season. Start with a dress in a colour or fabric you would wear to more than one event. Staud's purple printed satin Evangeline midi, Zimmermann's black off-the-shoulder Valiant maxi, Missoni's sequined crochet-knit maxi and Sea's paisley Hyacinth mini all fit the bill.
Shades of Purple
Purple is easy to wear to both day and evening weddings. Fforme's violet satin Mila maxi is the simplest option, Dries Van Noten's purple jacquard cloqué skirt is the separates route, and Christen's beige suede Edge sandals and Judith Leiber Couture's Matcha clutch keep the accessories light.
Long and Covered
Long sleeves and fuller coverage are a smart choice for cooler months and more traditional ceremonies. McQueen's blue draped satin gown has long sleeves, and Self-Portrait's black velvet maxi is just as elegant with a wrap on top. Aquazzura's black Orbit pumps and Loren Stewart's citrine earrings add just a little light.
Beads, Sequins and Gold
Beading and gold are the Art Deco side of wedding dressing. Marmar Halim's gold off-the-shoulder sequin gown and Jenny Packham's navy beaded Trinity gown suit an evening reception, and Oscar de la Renta's gold Wild Poppy earrings and Lanvin's black Pencil Cat clutch finish them.
Ruffles and Volume
Volume makes an entrance, which is exactly what a wedding guest dress can get away with. Aje.'s black ruffled organza Sonnet maxi and Chloé's orange gathered silk-georgette mini show two very different scales, and Gianvito Rossi's lime Sofia mules and Loewe's red Amazona bag lean into the colour.
Our honest take
Fall weddings are a chance to wear colour and texture you might not get away with at other events. If you take one thing away, let it be that a dress you can wear again is always the better choice, which usually means a solid colour and a shape you already like. Purple satin or a black velvet maxi will see you through several seasons of invitations. We would skip anything white, ivory or very pale, and we would think twice about a floor-length sequin gown for a daytime ceremony. Save the volume and the beading for evening, when they make the most sense.
