Fall trousers come in wide legs, straight legs, pleats and soft ponte pull ons, in wool blends and crepes. I picked ones that work for the office and the weekend, from J.Crew flannel to a Quince ponte trouser.
Fall Trousers: Wide Legs, Straight Legs and Ponte Pull-Ons
Tailored pairs that make getting dressed feel easy again.

Once the weather cools, trousers quietly take over from denim as the most useful thing in the closet. They look intentional with almost no effort: add a fine knit and a loafer and you are dressed for a meeting, a lunch or a gallery. This season the shapes are relaxed but still tailored. Wide legs that skim the floor, straight cuts with a crisp front crease, soft pleats that add movement, and barrel shapes for anyone who wants something newer. Fabrics matter as much as cut. Wool blends hold a press and feel warm, crepe drapes beautifully and travels well, and stretch ponte gives you the polish of tailoring with the comfort of a legging. Start with a black or charcoal pair, then branch out into chocolate, camel or a confident red.
Where To Start
The details that make trousers look expensive are mostly about length and rise. Hem wide legs so they just graze the top of your shoe, and wear them with the shoes you will actually pair them with when you check the length. A higher rise tucks a sweater neatly and elongates the leg. Pleats add room through the hip, while flat fronts look sleeker under a cropped jacket. Pull on styles are worth trying for long days.

Our honest take
We would start with one dark pair in a wool blend that you can wear four days a week without anyone noticing. After that, add a lighter neutral or a pair in a richer color for when you want the trousers to lead. Our view is that a good tailor is worth more than another pair, so budget a little for hemming. Hang trousers by the cuff to keep the crease, steam rather than iron, and rotate pairs so the fabric gets a rest. The black wide leg remains the hardest working option in this edit.
