Fall weddings call for richer fabrics and deeper colours than summer ones. These outfits include a printed velvet maxi, a jacquard jacket with a skirt, a long black dress and a checked midi. Each one comes with shoes, jewelry or a bag to match.
Fall Wedding Guest Outfits, From Velvet to Plaid

Four Starting Points
Velvet, checks and chiffon are the fabrics to look for this season. Sea's black floral velvet Leda midi, Alessandra Rich's beige ruffled checked silk dress, Ulla Johnson's black crepe and chiffon Laure midi and Theory's blue pleated crepe skirt each suit a different kind of wedding.
Printed Velvet
Velvet is the easiest fall wedding fabric to get right. Dries Van Noten's printed velvet maxi dress is rich and warm, and Le Sundial's black tasselled clutch keeps it evening-appropriate. Valentino's black Sinead pumps and Alaïa's tortoiseshell Edge bangle finish it.
A Two-Piece Instead
A jacket and skirt is a fresh alternative to a dress. Dries Van Noten's floral-jacquard jacket over Toteme's black wrap midi skirt looks polished and a little unexpected. Simone Rocha's crimson crystal Floral Drip earrings and Loewe's striped Flamenco clutch add colour.
The Long Black Dress
A long black dress is always right for an evening wedding. Tove's cape-effect Elia maxi is dramatic on its own, and Repossi's rose gold and malachite necklace adds a touch of colour. Manolo Blahnik's cobalt blue checked Jadara mules and Saint Laurent's antique rose satin clutch keep it from feeling too serious.
A Checked Midi
A checked dress suits a relaxed or daytime fall wedding. Dôen's blue checked Brielle midi pairs well with Aquazzura's black velvet Tati sandals. Roxanne First's gold diamond hoops and Saint Laurent's black Kate clutch make it feel dressy.
Our honest take
The main difference between summer and fall weddings is fabric weight and colour. If you take one thing away, let it be to choose one rich texture, such as velvet, jacquard or satin, and build around it. Deeper shades and prints look right in autumn light, and a jacket and skirt can be more interesting than a dress. We would skip anything very sheer or strappy if the wedding is outdoors after dark, unless you bring a wrap. Velvet or satin shoes are a nice seasonal touch. Finish with one statement, whether that is bold earrings or a colourful clutch, and keep the rest simple.
