Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint: The Single Red That Started It

The fenty beauty stunna lip paint arrived in November 2017 as one red hand-picked by Rihanna, and the lip wardrobe around it has since grown into liners, glosses and oils. Here is how that family fits together, from a chocolate brown Stunna to a cooling gloss.

Most brands launch a lipstick with a full shade range and a press release. Fenty Beauty launched its first liquid lipstick on November 23, 2017 in exactly one shade. That was Uncensored, a red Rihanna chose herself and, in the brand's words, tested obsessively so it would look right on everyone. It came about two and a half months after the brand debuted on September 8, 2017 with a foundation in 40 shades. The one-shade decision is the interesting part. Foundation had promised that everyone would be included, and the red was the proof that the promise reached lips too. That is the story behind the fenty beauty stunna lip paint, and it deserves telling because everything else in this edit grows out of it. Stunna is a soft-matte liquid color with a precision wand, and the brand now makes it in seven shades. Only one is here, Unveil, the chocolate brown. Around it I gathered the pencils that keep a matte edge crisp, because a fenty lip liner is the quickest way to make a liquid lip look finished, plus a berry-brown duo that pairs a liner with a gloss stick.

The gloss that launched with the brand

Gloss Bomb was the one lip gloss in the September 2017 launch lineup, and it has been the brand's shine reference ever since. The fenty gloss bomb story is really a scent and wand story: the brand describes a peach-vanilla scent and an XXL wand that covers the lip in one swipe. The clear Universal one is the original and the easiest place to begin. The Stix version is a medium-pigment stick in a peach nude, with vitamin E and shea butter in it. Gloss Bomb Heat adds a plumping blend, so expect a tingle and a hint of tint. The Cream Color Drip is the one I would hand to someone who says they hate gloss: it is a universal rose nude with medium-to-full coverage and no shimmer. Try a small dab of any of these on the center of a matte lip and press your lips together. You get a soft-focus middle without losing the edges.

Oils, a balm and a cooling gloss

The newer half of the family moves toward oils and balms. Gloss Bomb Oil is the sparkly one, in an icy lilac, with hyaluronic filling spheres and a lightweight oil feel. Fenty Treatz is the richer one on paper, with cacao extract for a chocolate scent, sweet cherry seed oil and cherry extracts, and a sheer hint of tint. The Lux Balm is clear and velvety with a creamy coconut scent, built on shea butter, mango butter and avocado oil. Gloss Bomb Ice is the cooling gloss, with peppermint and a clear, shimmer-free finish. What I would skip is putting a thick balm on right before Stunna. Let a light layer sink in for a couple of minutes or blot it, because a liquid matte grips dry lips and slides on slick ones.

Where I would start

If I had to build a small lip drawer from this, it would be three things. One liquid color, Stunna in Unveil, for days when you want the lip to stay put. One pencil in a rose that matches your own mouth. One gloss or oil for the middle of the day. That is a wardrobe, and it happens to trace the brand's own path from a single red to a whole family. I would begin with the color and add the comfort pieces one at a time, whichever your lips ask for first. If your lips want shine instead of paint, I sorted the best Fenty lip gloss shades and formulas separately.
