Five Minutes to Glowing Skin: The Affordable Essentials
A five-minute routine that works as hard as you do
A short routine works when every product earns its place. This edit strips skincare to the essentials: four steps in the morning (cleanse, serum, moisturize with SPF) and three at night (melt, treat, restore), using multitasking products from CeraVe, The Ordinary, Naturium, La Roche-Posay and more, almost all under $30. A standalone SPF is included if you prefer to keep moisturizer and sunscreen separate. Pick one product per step and you are done in about five minutes. I went deeper on a related idea in Five Minutes to Flawless: The Luxury Skincare Essentials Edit.

Morning step 1: a quick, gentle cleanse
Thirty seconds is enough. Massage a gentle cleanser over damp skin, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. These formulas are designed to clean without leaving skin feeling tight.
Morning step 2: one multitasking serum
Choose a single serum and let it do the work. Vitamin C and niacinamide are designed to brighten the look of skin and support an even-looking tone. Press it in while skin is still slightly damp.
Morning step 3: moisturizer and SPF in one
A moisturizer with built-in SPF replaces two steps. Dermatologists recommend a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, so apply a generous amount and reapply if you are outdoors for long periods.
Or choose a standalone SPF
If you prefer to keep sunscreen separate, these lightweight formulas sit comfortably over a moisturizer and are designed to leave little to no white cast.
Evening step 1: melt away the day
A cleansing balm or oil removes sunscreen and makeup in one pass. Massage over dry skin, add water to emulsify, then rinse. It is also a lovely way to end the day.
Evening · Step 1 · Melt away the day
Evening step 2: a targeted treatment
Retinoids are among the most studied ingredients for the look of fine lines and texture. Use one at night, start two to three nights a week, and build up slowly. Skip it on nights your skin feels sensitive.
Evening · Step 2 · Treatment (retinoid on 2 to 3 nights a week)
Evening step 3: a restoring night cream
Finish with a night cream designed to support skin while you sleep. A single generous layer is all you need.
Anytime: quick finishing touches
Keep a few multitaskers within reach. A lip balm, a lip mask or an eye serum takes seconds and can be added whenever skin needs it, morning or night.
Simple is a strategy
Five minutes, done consistently, will do more than a twenty-step routine you skip. Start with SPF, a cleanser and a moisturizer, then add a serum and a night treatment when you are ready.
