florabella Bags: A Shopper's Guide to Best Buys

florabella Bags: A Shopper's Guide to Best Buys

florabella is the Dallas resort label of raffia bags, wide-brim hats and cover-ups, started in 1998 and named for a woman who loved fashion and travel. I love a brand that packs a whole vacation into three accessories.

A resort house with a long memory

I am a sucker for a bag that makes a Tuesday feel like a holiday, and florabella has made a living from that feeling. The label started in 1998 when John, Glenna and Robin combined their fashion-industry experience into a resort collection, and the name honors Flora Rimmer, remembered for her love of fashion, travel and life. Glenna Rimmer and her stepdaughter Robin Marin are the design duo, working from an office and showroom in Dallas.

Natural fibers, color and function are the guideposts. Hand weaving, hand-dyeing, embroidery, beadwork, fair-trade sourcing and repurposed excess materials all belong to how the pieces get made, and the sustainability page lays it out. I like that the signature flower travels from the big Vallejo Tote to the smaller clutches and hats, giving a travel kit one recognizable thread.

The collection reads less like a single beach accessory and more like a plan for leaving town: something to carry, something to shield your face, and one small piece for the essentials.

These bags have a clear job, which is to bring handwoven texture to a beach weekend without making the outfit precious. The Vallejo Tote is the big carryall, with a little flower charm, and the Vallejo Lux Crochet Raffia Tote is its dressier cousin. For a smaller day, the Stintino Hand Crochet Raffia Wristlet keeps the raffia going, and the Rimini Clutch shrinks the scale again with a bit of gold at the clasp.

The Chastanet Crochet Raffia Clutch, Alegre Crochet Raffia Clutch, Donisa Clutch and Esplendor Crochet Raffia Clutch are the evening end of the shelf, while Foggia Crochet Raffia And Leather Tote Bag, Indore Large Crochet Raffia Tote Bag and Antilles Crochet Raffia And Leather Tote Bag give you more room for the beach towel. In my daydream, she carries the Vallejo from the market to the water, then swaps to the Rimini for dinner. A tip: hold the tote up against your usual travel bag before you pack both.

Shade with a point of view

The hats offer two moods, not one dress-up trick. The Billie Cowboy Hat has a pinched crown and turquoise-toned stones at the band, which is the version I would wear to look like I know what I am doing at a ranch-themed brunch. For broader shade, the Marie Wide Sun Hat adds a little metallic thread and a flower pin.

The Tanya Crochet Raffia Cowboy Hat gives the cowboy shape a crochet surface, and the Skyler Crochet Raffia Cowboy Hat, Tracey Hat and Kendra Lux Cowboy Hat round out the choices. I picture her at a long lunch under the Marie, then swapping to the Billie for a walk down to the water. What I would skip is soaking the raffia, so spot-clean the Tanya instead.

I come back to florabella for a particular kind of packing logic: one bag for the beach, one smaller one for dinner, and a hat for the walk between them. The hand techniques and repurposed materials add something real, so the resort mood is not only a mood. I would choose the pieces I will carry across a full day and let the textured raffia be the point. Although I will admit I always pack one more clutch than I need.
