From a Dental Supply Shop to OPI Nail Envy in Bubble Bath Pink

OPI began life selling dental supplies, and OPI Nail Envy is the clear bottle that grew up to wear color. Here are the tinted strengtheners, a serum and the cuticle care that goes with them, with Manucurist's French take on nail polish treatments alongside.

OPI started in 1981 as Odontorium Products, a small dental supply company run by George Schaeffer and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann. Then they noticed that dentures and acrylic nails share the same chemistry, and decided nails were more fun. I love that origin story because it explains the brand's whole personality: part lab, part showroom. The color line arrived in 1989 with 30 shades, and Weiss-Fischmann carries the title of co-founder and Original Nail-blazer. OPI Nail Envy lives on the lab side of that split. The brand's latest version is a vegan formula with what it calls Tri-Flex Technology, a liquid shield meant to reinforce the nail in layers, plus biotin, calcium and vitamins A, C and E. OPI says nails are up to 95% stronger in one week when used as directed, so read that as the brand's claim and judge your own nails. What I like is the tinted range, because a nail strengthener you actually want to look at is one you keep using. The first four are the pinks and nudes. Bubble Bath shares its name with one of OPI's most popular lacquers, a sheer pink that debuted in a 2001 bridal collection. Double Nude-y is a nude creme, Pink to Envy is a sheer rosy pink, and Powerful Pink is a bold magenta pearl.

Twelve boxes on a pale gray page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Bubble Bath, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Double Nude-y, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Pink to Envy, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Powerful Pink, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Tough Luv, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in Big Apple Red, OPI Nail Envy Nail Strengthener in All Night Strong, OPI Repair Mode Bond Building Nail Serum, OPI Nature Strong Moisturizing Nail & Cuticle Oil, OPI Nature Strong To the Rescue Overnight Cuticle Balm, Manucurist Active Smooth Ridge Filler Strengthener and Manucurist Active Glow Nail Treatment in Raspberry.
OPI Nail Envy

Reds, navy and a serum

The second grid is where Nail Envy gets dramatic. Big Apple Red is one of the two colors OPI singles out in the tinted line, Tough Luv is a deep red pearl, and All Night Strong is a dark navy pearl that looks far more polished than a treatment has any right to. OPI describes all three as the same strengthener with color added, so the routine does not change. Two coats on bare nails on day one, then one more coat each day, and remove on day seven if you like. You can also wear any of them under regular polish as a base coat. The fourth product here is the Repair Mode bond building serum. It is a different thing entirely, a clear serum with a cap made with recycled plastic, and the brand says it gives 4x stronger nails in 6 days when used as directed. I would use it the way the label suggests and keep the colored strengtheners for days when I want polish without the commitment. One practical tip: swipe the brush along the free edge of the nail, because that is where splits start.

What the night shift is for

Nail care does not stop at the nail plate, and grid three is the evening shift. OPI's Nature Strong line brings a moisturizing nail and cuticle oil and the To the Rescue overnight cuticle balm, both scented with the brand's MoodBloom technology. The oil is light, so it is easy to keep by the sink. The balm is thicker and meant to sit on overnight like a blanket for your hands. Then there is Manucurist, which a woman named Gaëlle Lebrat-Personnaz took over from her mother in 2016 after years in luxury fashion, with a plan to make cleaner nail products. Active Smooth is a milky pinkish beige ridge filler with collagen, peach extract and AHAs, and Active Glow in Raspberry is a peachy pink gloss with a mirror finish. What I would skip is buffing ridges flat every week, which thins the nail you are trying to strengthen. Fill them with a smoothing treatment, add oil at night, and leave the file in the drawer.

How I would use all of it

I would run Nail Envy the way a dentist runs a cleaning: short, regular and a little boring. Pick one tint, start on a bare nail, and build the week as the brand suggests. Then take it off, rest a day and begin again. Keep a bottle of oil where you brush your teeth and a balm on the nightstand, and you will cover most of what nails ask for. The color is the reward for doing the dull part. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together OPI Bubble Bath and the Sheer Pinks That Look Like Your Nails, Only Better and Sally Hansen.
